Rosh Hashanah

L’Shanah Tovah to all those observing Rosh Hashanah and a healthy year ahead to all! As we approach the high holidays after a tragically difficult year in 5784, we offer our best wishes to you and your family and express our hope for a year ahead that is more peaceful, hopeful, and joyful here in our community, and throughout the world.

Virtual Attainable Housing Strategies listening session

The sixth and final community listening session to receive public input on the Attainable Housing Strategies initiative will be held virtually on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 12 p.m. The initiative includes draft recommendations from the Planning Board to increase options for property owners to build more housing types in the County to address the housing shortage.

Registration is currently full with more than 950 attendees registered, but we encourage community members to watch the listening session live on YouTube and Facebook. The Zoom recording will also be posted on the Council's Attainable Housing Strategies Listening Session webpage after the meeting. You can submit additional feedback on the initiative here.

Montgomery County earns AAA Bond Rating

Montgomery County has once again secured a coveted triple-A bond rating for the 52nd year in a row! This is the highest possible credit rating available for local governments, allowing us to borrow at the lowest rates to fund schools, libraries, and recreation centers. With prudence and collaboration, we have navigated through unprecedented challenges to fund schools, public safety and affordable housing at record levels, while investing in economic growth so we can maintain Montgomery County as a thriving community for residents and businesses. Our hard-earned, triple-A rating reflects our shared commitment to sound fiscal policies and our careful stewardship of taxpayer dollars. We are proud of our triple-A rating and will continue to carefully analyze all budgetary decisions and remain steadfast in maintaining our fiscal principles which earned Montgomery County this highly-coveted bond rating.

Housing tour with Secretary Jake Day

I was honored to join Maryland Secretary of Housing and Community Development Jake Day and members of the Moore administration for a tour of affordable, mixed-use and transit-oriented housing sites across Montgomery County. His visit included stops in Forest Glen, Wheaton, Glenmont, North Bethesda and Rockville. During the visit, we discussed ways we are addressing the housing shortage in Montgomery County and ways we can work with our state partners to build sustainably for the future. We appreciate the Moore administration and Secretary Day for the ongoing support and interest in the exciting developments happening across the County.

Hillandale Gateway groundbreaking

I was thrilled to join industry and elected leaders to break ground on the $303 million Hillandale Gateway community. The project brings sustainable, mixed-income housing to East County, financed with innovative public-private partnerships including the Housing Opportunities Commission’s Housing Production Fund and the Montgomery County Green Bank, both of which I shepherded through the Council in previous years. With 463 new units, this historic development represents the largest investment in residential housing in East County in more than 50 years and the Mid-Atlantic region’s first high-rise, multifamily net-zero development.

Grand opening of the Catherine and Isiah Leggett Math and Science Building

I was honored to join the dedication of the Catherine and Isiah Leggett Math and Science Building at Montgomery College’s Takoma Park campus. The cutting-edge facility is a fitting tribute to former County Executive Ike Leggett and former First Lady Catherine Leggett, who share a long history of empowering the community through education and innovation. This spectacular building will inspire and empower countless students in the decades to come, just as Catherine and Ike Leggett have over their extraordinary lives of service to our community. The new facility features 20 labs, a planetarium, a math and science learning center and a greenhouse to prepare students for careers in engineering, cyber technology, computer science and other STEM-related fields.
