Celebrating Local Ag

Make Your Voice Heard
Your opinion is valuable - please share your insights on two important policy issues: transportation and aging.
- The Council of Governments (COG) and Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) request your feedback about your experiences using transportation in the Metropolitan Washington area. COG and WMATA will use the results of this survey to inform their joint DMVMoves initiative - a generational opportunity to shape the future growth of transit across the DMV. The survey is open until August 11.
- The US Department of Health and Human Services is developing a National Plan on Aging, which is critically important to Montgomery County because our fastest growing population is senior citizens. If you have insights on this, complete the survey by September 15.
Plastic Film Now Accepted at Recycling Center
The Department of Environmental Protection now recycles plastic films, wraps, and bags at the Shady Grove Transfer Station and Recycling Center in Derwood. Grocery bags, bread bags, and other items included in this category don't go in most curbside recycling bins, but can now be dropped off at the Transfer Station.
The plastic must be clean, dry, and free from other materials or contaminants. Biodegradable or compostable bags and packaging aren't accepted.
Registration for Most Recreation Fall Programs and Activities Begins August 12

Take Action Against the Spotted Lanternfly
You may notice an unwelcome visitor in your neighborhood this time of year. The Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) is an invasive insect that stresses our local flora. The easiest and least environmentally impactful way to remove SLF is to manually kill it (i.e. squash it with your foot) or use a trap (store bought or do-it-yourself passive systems that provide continuous control if they are maintained).
The Maryland Department of Agriculture cautions against insecticides because there is no insecticide that is specific to SLF so any application of insecticide has the potential to kill non-target insects. Learn more.
