New Purple Line Vehicles

All aboard!!

I recently joined local, state and regional leaders to take a sneak peek at the trains that will be used for the future Purple Line. Each vehicle is 142 feet long — the longest light rail trains in the nation — and can hold up to 430 passengers. The electric-powered vehicles are also designed to limit noise pollution.

With all the work taking place this summer, officials from the Maryland Transit Administration report that the project is over 65% complete. I will continue holding hearings at the Transportation & Environment Committee to receive project updates.

Supporting Small Businesses

I recently joined the Montgomery County Business Center team in White Oak to talk with small business owners about challenges they are experiencing. We visited an Ethiopian market, a general store, a West African restaurant and a hair salon ––  a reflection of our community’s diversity.

Through our conversations, the business owners were able to share their thoughts on improving the local economy while also learning about my legislation that will reduce office vacancies.

Community Conversations

I always enjoy opportunities to meet with residents, community groups and other local organizations to hear about their priorities and concerns. Earlier this month I met with residents of Friendship Heights, members of several homeowners associations and condo boards, who shared their thoughts on environmental sustainability, public transportation and neighborhood walkability.

If you would like to host a community conversation with neighbors, please email me and we will schedule a visit to your neighborhood.

Silver Spring Chamber

I was pleased to attend the Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce’s (GSSCC) annual awards ceremony, an event to celebrate the contributions of local businesses and the dedicated individuals who lead them.

Congratulations to all of the awardees and to Juanita Stewart, who was inducted as the new GSSCC board chair. Thank you to all the business leaders who help make our community thrive!

New Fire Chief

Congratulations to Corey Smedley on his recent confirmation as Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service’s new Chief. Chief Smedley has had a decades-long career in public safety, beginning in the U.S. Army Reserve 33 years ago. He has since held leadership roles in local jurisdictions, serving as Prince George’s County’s Deputy Fire Chief and as Chief of the Alexandria Fire Department.

I am excited to welcome Chief Smedley to Montgomery County and look forward to working with him to keep our community safe.

Constituent Corner

A resident concerned about pedestrian safety recently wrote to me asking for help. She noted the number of pedestrians she sees on a daily basis walking to school, attending religious services or going shopping, and was worried about reckless driving in her neighborhood. We flagged the issue for TrafficOps, and they began the process of implementing additional safety measures, including more streetlights and speed bumps.

The resident was grateful for our work and proud to have helped make her community safer.
