Pride Month

Pride Month is here! Montgomery County celebrates being a welcoming and inclusive community where everyone is valued and has the freedom to be their true authentic self. I was honored to participate in the sixth annual Progress Pride flag raising ceremony in Rockville with Councilmember Evan Glass, County Executive Elrich, colleagues and community leaders. The County Council will host its annual Pride commemoration on June 25.

Check out all the ways to celebrate Pride with events across Montgomery County all month long.

Happy Pride!

Juneteenth

This Wednesday, we recognize Juneteenth, Freedom Day, which celebrates the emancipation of African Americans from slavery in the U.S. It is celebrated with events commemorating African American culture and achievements as we recognize a monumental shift in American history.

This weekend, I was honored to attend the 27th annual Montgomery County Juneteenth celebration at the Black Rock Center for the Arts in Germantown, the Opening Night Celebration of the Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival, and a Juneteenth Interfaith Worship Service to get a week of freedom festivities started. The Council will present a proclamation to commemorate Juneteenth during tomorrow morning’s Council session. There are also local community celebrations that will be held this week, including the Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival. You won’t want to miss it!

Montgomery Police and Fire Chief Nominees

The County Executive recently announced his nominations for the new Montgomery County Police Chief and Fire Chief. The Council interviewed the police chief nominee, MCPD Assistant Chief Marc Yamada, last week and will vote on his appointment tomorrow, June 18. We will interview fire chief nominee Corey Smedley on June 25.

Like all nominations we receive from the County Executive, we will do our due diligence to thoroughly review the candidates during the interview process and work swiftly to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of service to County residents. We are committed to selecting candidates who will lead with integrity, treat all residents with respect and dignity, and enhance public safety to best serve and protect our communities.

As we usher in new leadership, I’d like to share my gratitude for outgoing MCPD Chief Marcus Jones and former Fire Chief Scott Goldstein for their decades of public service to Montgomery County.

Congratulations to the Class of 2024!

As the school year comes to an end, I’d like to congratulate all Montgomery County graduates, their families and all the educators and mentors who helped them along the way! Congratulations on this major accomplishment and I look forward to seeing the great things that the Class of 2024 accomplishes. As our graduates move on to the next chapter of life, I know they will continue to work hard and make their loved ones and Montgomery County proud.

Share your thoughts on the Great Seneca Plan

Last week the Council held a public hearing on the Great Seneca Plan, a comprehensive master plan amendment that will evaluate recommendations for land use, zoning, urban design, environment, and more within the plan’s area and surrounding communities, which include the cities of Gaithersburg and Rockville and the town of Washington Grove. Thanks to all the community members who shared their feedback on the plan. If you didn’t make it to the public hearing, you can still submit testimony on the Great Seneca Plan for the Council’s consideration through the Council website.
