Safe Trip App

seniordogdriving2

What is AARP SafeTrip?

AARP SafeTrip is a free smartphone app that lets drivers securely monitor key driving behaviors like speeding, braking and cornering – proven indicators of safe-driving practices and crash prevention. Drivers can clearly see how they’re doing on every trip –  and how they can improve behind the wheel.

Why was AARP SafeTrip developed?

AARP SafeTrip aims to promote safe-driving habits using lessons and concepts found in the award-winning AARP Smart Driver™ course, the nation’s largest and longest-running defensive driving course designed for drivers 50 and older. Additionally, the app empowers drivers to learn about their driving behaviors without the worry that one bad incident could impact their insurance rates. AARP Driver Safety developed AARP SafeTrip, with the help of Cambridge Mobile Telematics, as an extension of its programs and products.

How does AARP SafeTrip work?

AARP SafeTrip uses your smartphone’s position and sensors to measure driving quality based on acceleration, braking, cornering, speeding, and phone usage while driving. Every time you go for a drive, the app will assign a score for your trip based on quality -- with higher scores for better driving. These scores for individual trips are used to calculate your driving overall score, which the app will display on the main screen dashboard. The app highlights your driving achievements and current streaks of good driving behaviors. It also features a leaderboard, where you can measure your safe-driving skills among other drivers anonymously.

Where/How can I find AARP SafeTrip?

The AARP SafeTrip app is available to download for free on either the App Store or Google Play (depending on your device) by searching for "AARP SafeTrip." You can also visit aarp.org/SafeTrip for a direct link to download.

Will AARP SafeTrip work with my phone?

AARP SafeTrip should be compatible with most late-model iPhone and Android devices. That said, certain phone models may not have the necessary hardware that AARP SafeTrip needs to record every trip. The best way to check your phone's compatibility is to go to either the App Store or Google Play (depending on your device) and search for "AARP SafeTrip." If your phone has the necessary features to make it compatible with AARP SafeTrip, the app will appear in search results as downloadable. Additionally, location services will need to be enabled in order for the app to analyze driving data.

Is AARP SafeTrip only available to AARP members?

No, anyone can use the AARP SafeTrip app. AARP members have access to additional benefits, such as earning 50% more AARP Rewards points than non-members.

Does AARP Safe Trip share my driving data with my insurance company/other companies?

Respecting your privacy is an important part of our commitment to providing an excellent service and product. Your personal information and individually collected data will be treated as described in the AARP privacy policy. AARP will share a user’s name, email address and other limited information needed with its service providers to connect a user’s AARP SafeTrip account to the user’s AARP Rewards account and provide services –  see AARP’s privacy policy for more information on AARP’s data sharing practices at aarp.org/privacy. The information AARP SafeTrip collects about your driving belongs to you and will never affect your insurance premiums.

How effective is AARP SafeTrip?

During a pilot study of similar technology, AARP Driver Safety saw 60% of participants improve their safe driving scores between the study’s start and finish. Overall, 75% of pilot participants said a similar app would allow them to extend their safe driving years.

What if I have questions or need assistance with the AARP SafeTrip app?

Visit help.aarp.org and search for “SafeTrip” in the main search bar.
