Make Sure Your Account is Up to Date Ahead of Winter Registration

While the days may be getting shorter, there is still plenty of time to plan ahead for Montgomery County Recreation’s winter registration, which will begin at 6:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 13, for County residents for most programs and activities. Registration for Bone Builders will open at 9 a.m.

Non-County residents will be able to register for Recreation’s programs on Wednesday, Nov. 15.

To help ease your experience on registration day, start planning now! Log in to your ActiveMONTGOMERY account ahead of time to make sure all your information is up to date. Have you heard about the ActiveMONTGOMERY wish list feature? Create a personalized list of programs in your account that can be recalled quickly for reference or to purchase on registration day. Due to enhanced security considerations, our registration website has limited access for customers outside of the United States. Countries with access include Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States. Please reach out to info@activemontgomery.org if you anticipate frequently needing website access abroad.

Winter offerings include fitness, sports, visual and performing arts, therapeutic recreation and more. Programs are now viewable online. While online registration is encouraged, registration will also be available by mail, drop-off or in-person. On Monday, Nov. 13 in-person registration will be available at 6:30 a.m. at four of the County’s aquatic centers and at the administrative offices in Wheaton, located at 2425 Reedie Drive, 10th floor. In-person registration will also be available at all other Recreation facilities during regular business hours.

Montgomery County Recreation is seeking a highly motivated Community Outreach Specialist (IRC60404) to support the department's mission and whose creativity and knowledge can be demonstrated in a wide range of services.

Community Outreach Specialists direct outreach and liaison with residents and organizations to identify areas of interest; and plan, coordinate and deliver neighborhood-based programs and services. Responsibilities also include data collection and analysis, representing our organization in the community, and planning and executing community events, activities and programs. This position requires work on some nights and weekends.

Want to help make a difference for seniors across Montgomery County? Montgomery County Recreation is looking for highly motivated and experienced nutrition managers to help serve our seniors at multiple locations across the County, including the new Silver Spring Recreation and Aquatic Center (SSRAC). Apply for employment here.

The Senior Nutrition Manager is a seasonal position that works in collaboration with our Senior Programs Team, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and Senior Nutrition Program (SNP) staff to provide nutritional meals to seniors in a congregate meal setting.

Responsibilities include:

Introducing the program to new participants and assisting them in getting to know other participants and services offered.
Be present during the entire meal service period to serve as host and general manager.
Sharing nutritional education in various formats.
Taking meal reservations, cancellations, or adjustments within meal allocation limits, clearly indicating the menu choice for each person each day.
Enforcing cancellation and no-show policies.
Setting up and serving pre-plated meals provided by the caterer to program participants according to procedures.
Ensuring all sanitation procedures for lunch area.
Accepting meal deliveries, recording food temperatures, and following food handling procedures.

Individuals in this position will be required to attend a training from DHHS, follow all proper food handling policies and regulations and be able to navigate applications including Excel, Word, Outlook, Forms, etc. This is a year-round seasonal lunch position that has morning prep time and afternoon data tracking/input built into the position. Start times may vary daily based on the delivery of meals from the caterer. All candidates will be required to successfully pass a criminal history background check.

The hourly rate for this position is $21.01. This posting will be used to fill multiple openings throughout Montgomery County including at Marilyn J. Praisner CRC, Mid-County CRC, North Potomac CRC, SSRAC and White Oak CRC.

Fall-ing into Celebrations with Montgomery County Recreation

October was a particularly active month at Montgomery County Recreation as we held a vast array of fall events for the entire family to enjoy.

Fall festivals were held across many of our recreation centers and featured activities including pumpkin and face painting, tractor rides, moon bounces, relay races, trunk or treat, music and more. Continuing in the seasonal fun was the return of the floating pumpkin patches at our indoor swim facilities where young swimmers could ‘pick’ out a pumpkin in the water and then decorate it back on land with their families. While not a traditional pumpkin patch, our aquatic version has become an extremely fun yearly tradition!

Other fun Halloween-related events last month included costume movie nights at Long Branch and Upper County Community Recreation Centers, haunted houses at Long Branch and Clara Barton Neighborhood Recreation Center, Glow in the Dark Pickleball at Bauer Community Recreation Center and the Wheaton Skele-bration the day before Halloween!

Lights On Afterschool

On Thursday, Oct. 26, Afterschool Alliance celebrated its 24th annual Lights on Afterschool to highlight the nationwide call on the importance and access to high quality afterschool programs for children throughout the United States. In Maryland, 64 percent of parents agree that afterschool programs help give parents peace of mind about their children when they are at work, and 54 percent agree that afterschool programs help keep kids safe and out of trouble.

From Excel Beyond the Bell, Club Adventure, RecXtra, RecZone and more, Montgomery County Recreation is extremely proud to not only provide a variety of meaningful afterschool programs for County youth, but to also have dedicated staff who help create positive experiences and memories for our participants.

Silver Spring Recreation and Aquatic Center Update

Our staff is hard at work as we prepare to open the Silver Spring Recreation and Aquatic Center (SSRAC). SSRAC will feature a gymnasium, exercise and weight room spaces, dance studios, pools for general swimming and aquatic play, multipurpose activity rooms and more. Our team has been actively doing outreach in Silver Spring! We’re currently hiring for positions at SSRAC including lifeguards, front desk support staff and a nutrition manager. Explore current and available positions and apply here. Make sure to ask our staff all about what SSRAC will have to offer when you see them at an event in your area.

Showcasing Our Services: Yoga with Suzana Cooper

After working on her own as a yoga instructor for several years, Suzana Cooper joined Montgomery County Recreation as a contractor in 1998 where she has provided her expertise to help countless County residents.

While Suzana has held her classes at various Recreation facilities over the years, she has mainly taught at Jane E. Lawton Community Recreation Center. In fact, many of Suzana's students followed her to Lawton once she started working with Montgomery County Recreation!

Last month, Montgomery County Recreation surprised Suzana with a plaque celebrating her 25 years of service to the community with the department. Thank you, Suzana for your dedication to bettering the physical, mental and emotional well-being of so many County residents through your work. Find some of Suzana's classes here.
