In our ongoing efforts to reduce the number lives lost to overdose, the State's Attorney's Office is holding a student video contest and entries are now being accepted.
This contest challenges teenagers to create an original video to promote awareness about the dangers of illicit opioids, fentanyl and risk of overdose. The video contest is open to all 6th - 12th grade students living in Montgomery County. Top prize is $1,000, second place is $750, third place and fan favorite winners will receive $500-- all donated by The Magnolia Companies in honor of two young Montgomery County residents lost to fentanyl; Michael Pisarra and Matthew Loudoun.
The State’s Attorney’s Office “data dashboard" is now live! It's a publicly available resource designed to provide the community with access to information about case referrals, outcomes, and performance indicators. |

The Montgomery County Prosecutorial Dashboard was created by the nonprofit agency, Prosecutorial Performance Indicators.
We are pleased to be able to provide a clearer view into the work of our office and how the criminal justice system operates in our community. This is the result of a two-year, grant funded study commissioned by State’s Attorney John McCarthy. It is the first of its kind in the state of Maryland.
As part of this project, we received the Final Report on Racial Justice in Prosecution in Montgomery County from Brian Johnson, PhD, a professor of Criminology at the University of Maryland in collaboration with Towson University and George Washington University. It is published within the dashboard under the heading “Data Stories.”
“Data and transparency lead to greater access to justice. This is a starting place, and we will now be able to monitor trends over time to understand what’s working and where there are opportunities for improvement,” said State’s Attorney McCarthy.

Throughout the month of October, the Montgomery County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council (DVCC) has been urging residents to “Know the Signs” of domestic violence, the theme for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
|
The Montgomery County Council presented a proclamation on Tuesday, Oct. 3, recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Silver Spring Civic Building at Veterans Plaza has a display featuring dozens of yard signs containing warning signs for those experiencing domestic violence and information about available resources.
People in need of assistance or having concerns for a friend or family member should call the Montgomery County Family Justice Center at 240-773-0444, the Montgomery County Crisis Center at 240-777-4000 or email safe@montgomerycountymd.gov.
The project is an initiative of the DVCC, whose members include the Montgomery County Office of the Sheriff, the Montgomery County Police Department, the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, the District Court of Maryland for Montgomery County, the Montgomery County Circuit Court, the Board of Education of Montgomery County Public Schools, the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, the Montgomery County Council, the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, the Montgomery County Commission for Women and the Montgomery County Department of Correction and Rehabilitation.
During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, State's Attorney McCarthy joined Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action to urge the U.S. Supreme Court to make a common sense decision in United States v. Rahimi.
On Nov. 7th, the justices will hear arguments in U.S. v. Rahimi, a case which centers on the longstanding federal law prohibiting anyone subject to a domestic violence restraining order from possessing firearms.
In the weeks since the horrific and unconscionable terror attacks in Israel, we pray for the peaceful return of hostages, and we continue to mourn the innocent people killed in the region. At this critical time, when emotions are running high, we need to remember that Montgomery County is a proudly diverse and welcoming community. There is no room for hate, bigotry, antisemitism, anti-Muslim hate, or violence in any form here and we have resources available for all.
