Novavax Tour

I was delighted to visit Novavax and take a tour of their innovative global headquarters in Gaithersburg. This internationally known biotech company played an important role during the COVID-19 pandemic by developing the fourth vaccine approved in the U.S. It was fascinating to learn more about the life-saving work and research being done right here in our community.

Let’s continue growing the number of biotech and life sciences companies that are choosing Montgomery County as their home base!

Fairland-Briggs Chaney Master Plan

The Council will hold a public hearing on the Fairland and Briggs Chaney Master Plan on Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. at the East County Community Recreation Center in Silver Spring. The master plan provides a roadmap for new jobs and housing, while also including quality of life improvements for people who already call this community home.

The plan will provide policy recommendations on land uses and zoning, housing, transportation, historic preservation, parks and the environment.

I recently joined the Planning Department and Council staff for a bus tour of East County to learn more about Montgomery Planning’s vision for the community. Register for the opportunity to speak at the public hearing.

African Heritage Month

I was honored to kick off the Council’s third annual African Heritage Month commemoration. We are proud that so many in the African community have chosen to make Montgomery County their home. The African population makes up over 16 percent of the overall immigrant population in our own community and the rich cultures within the African diaspora are woven into the fabric of our community.

As we honor the contributions of the African community locally and globally, we also reflect on our shared history and the importance of preserving the past through education of the next generation and generations to come.

National Service Dog Month

This week we showed appreciation to our four-legged friends whose extraordinary services have life-changing impacts for people with disabilities. National Service Dog Month is recognized every September as a time to raise awareness and show appreciation for the hard work of service dogs and the support they provide to the people in their care. These special pups dedicate their lives to help their human companions. I also want to share my appreciation for all the organizations and individuals who train service dogs in Montgomery County and across the state.

Democracy Can Be A Walk in the Park

It was great to join Congressman Jamie Raskin, District 20 representatives, friends and neighbors for a walk for democracy! From expanding access to voting and enacting ranked choice voting to expanding public financing of elections, there’s more we can do to make democracy work for everyone.

Constituent Corner

A resident who was moving into a new apartment–using her Housing Opportunities Commission (HOC) voucher–contacted our office because of delays in being able to move in. Housing quality standards require that all rental units are inspected to ensure that they are safe, healthy, and comfortable. We got in touch with HOC and found out the unit had passed inspection and relayed the good news to the constituent.
