 County Executive Elrich uses much of his video this week to excerpt a conversation with police leaders about “30 x 30” to increase the percentage of women in the police force – it gives a glimpse why it’s needed and why the impact on policing will be greater than simply changing the gender ratios. He also discusses two conversations with Governor Wes Moore in Montgomery County this week, including a walking tour of Georgia Avenue in Wheaton. He also reflects on the start of Pride Month and the many ways Montgomery County will join the celebration throughout June. And he highlights the many county programs that have recently won national awards.
 The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will temporarily close the ramp from northbound MD 355 (Rockville Pike) to the outer loop (westbound) of the Capital Beltway (I-495) for several hours a day next week to complete a drainage project. Work will start Monday, June 5, and will be completed by Friday, June 9, weather permitting.
 The Washington Folk Festival, in its 41st year, will return to Glen Echo Park on Saturday-Sunday, June 3-4, with free performances each day from noon-7 p.m. The festival will host more than 450 performances on seven stages.
AM Salsa and Danceintime will team up from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6, to bring a free “Outdoor Salsa Night” to Veterans Plaza in Downtown Silver Spring. The evening of lively music, which will include DJ Danilo, is part of the Twilight Tuesdays series presented by Silver Spring Town Center, Inc.
 A full lineup of special events and programs in June sponsored by Montgomery Parks will include the start of the summer Parks Playhouse performances, its Summer Twilight Concert Series, Heritage Days, MudFest, the Juneteenth celebrations and Pride Month events.
 Authors Emanuel Xavier and Regie Cabico will be the featured speakers from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 9, in a free event that will be part of the “Contemporary Conversations Series” of Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL). They will talk about the importance of poetry, storytelling and the spoken word at the Wheaton Library as MCPL joins in the celebration of June as Pride Month. The event also will be offered via livestreaming.

Presentation on Monday, June 12The 14th Annual Silver Spring Blues Festival will include a special free online presentation from 7-8 p.m. on Monday, June 12, as music historian Rick Franklin leads “The History of the Piedmont Blues, a Journey Through the Lens of Black Artists.”

Montgomery County’s Department of Alcohol Beverage Services will open its new Gaithersburg Square store under its upgraded retail concept, “Oak Barrel & Vine,” at 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, June 15. Elected officials and alcohol industry representatives plan to attend the opening. Walt “The Wizard” Williams, a former basketball star at the University of Maryland who went on to play 11 seasons in the NBA, will be present to sign bottles of his Clutch vodka.
 The Montgomery County Public Libraries’ Summer Reading Challenge! will begin on Saturday, June 17, at the Rockville Memorial Library with a theme of All Together Now. The slogan represents kindness, friendship and unity.
Montgomery County’s 26th Juneteenth Celebration will be held from noon-10 p.m. at the BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown on Saturday, June 17. This year’s theme, “Journey to Freedom: Acknowledge, Educate, and Celebrate” will showcase tracing the African American struggle for freedom through education, art, dance, music and honoring elders.
WSSC Water will hold an open house from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, at Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg that will range from offering water-saving tips to helping customers who have fallen behind on their water bills.
Montgomery Parks will hold a community meeting from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6, at the National Capital Trolley Museum in Colesville to share information about a proposed disc golf course at Northwest Branch Recreational Park. The planned disc golf course at Northwest Branch Recreational Park will be the first 18-hole course in Montgomery Parks.
