Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich this week talks about the dedication of a new, 267-unit affordable senior housing complex in Silver Spring that was named for former County Executive Isiah Leggett, who was a strong advocate for affordable housing. He addresses the many ways the County will join in the celebration of Asian American Pacific Islander Month. He also encourages residents to join in Visit Montgomery’s special events throughout May during its “Discover MoCo” campaign.
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and County Council President Evan Glass today joined Maryland Governor Wes Moore, Congressman Jamie Raskin and community leaders in Silver Spring as the County’s Housing Opportunities Commission (HOC) dedicated its newest affordable senior community, “The Leggett.” The 267-unit, 16-story complex was named for former County Executive Isiah Leggett, who was a strong advocate for affordable housing.
The Montgomery County Planning Board has approved the Little Falls Parkway pilot project that will reduce the number of lanes on the road between Arlington Road and Dorset Avenue from four to two and incorporate turn lanes, shoulders, a median at the Capital Crescent Trail crossing and a median between the travel lanes where feasible. However, County Executive Marc Elrich has expressed concern about the plan based on feedback he has received and said he will further examine the proposal.
The 11th Annual VisArts Rockville Arts Festival will be held Saturday, May 6, and Sunday, May 7, in Rockville Town Square. The free outdoor festival will be open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. each day and will feature original works from 130 artists and artisans.
Montgomery County Recreation’s summer program registration begins at 6:30 a.m. on Monday, May 15, for County residents for most programs and activities. Registration for Bone Builders, Day Trippers and Senior Outdoor Adventures in Recreation (SOAR) will begin at 9 a.m.
The free spring and summer concert series at the Good Hope Neighborhood Recreation Center in Silver Spring, which is presented as a partnership between Bloom by Strathmore and Montgomery County Recreation, will continue at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, with Latin jazz star Taisha Estrada.
“Discover MoCo Month” in May will be a collection of week-long programs sponsored by Visit Montgomery to celebrate the County’s small businesses and entrepreneurial spirit. Throughout the month, visitors and local residents will be able to access deals, discounts and special events at a selection of the County’s hotels, restaurants, attractions, retail businesses and craft beverage producers.
Montgomery County’s Community Use of Public Facilities (CUPF) office is now accepting reservations to use Montgomery County Public Schools facilities during summer break and for large events during the 2023-34 school year.
High school students across Montgomery County have a message for their peers: “Put those phones away when driving or walking.” That theme was emphasized as the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) announced the winners of its 2023 “Heads Up, Phones Down” video contest.
Montgomery County local businesses seeking opportunities to become subcontractors for larger entities will be able to meet with more than 50 prime contractors, government agencies and local resources on Tuesday, May 9, when the County Department of Procurement holds a “Meet the Primes” expo from 9 a.m.-noon at the Silver Spring Civic Building.

The nature centers operated by Montgomery Parks will have an exciting and fun array of programs and activities in May, including the annual native plant sales, Mother’s Day crafts and nature hikes.
The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), in collaboration with the Washington Area Bicycle Association (WABA), is offering adult bike classes in May and June. The classes include a learn to ride and a basic skills class. MCDOT also will offer three remaining free scooter classes in spring.
Swim to New Waters: In the Studio with Artist Mariam Memarsadeghi will take a deep dive into her vibrant and expressive work in an online presentation of Silver Spring Town Center, Inc. from 7-8 p.m. on Thursday, May 11.
National Bike to Work Day will be held on Friday, May 19, and the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will sponsor seven pit stops throughout the County as part of the Washington Region’s participation in the event. Registration for the free event is now open. The first 15,000 bicyclists to register and participate will get a free t-shirt and will be automatically entered into a raffle for a chance to win a new bike.
Olney Writer’s Group Will Present Seventh Annual Literary Forum at Olney Library on Sunday, May 7
The Olney Writer’s Group will present its Seventh Annual Literary Forum at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, at the Olney branch of Montgomery County Public Libraries. At the forum, which is open to the public, 10 members of the group will read short excerpts of their work, spanning memoirs, fiction, science fiction, fantasy and poetry.

Montgomery County Public Libraries and the Montgomery County Commission for Women will be offering a series of free financial seminars in May on the ins and outs of "all things money.” The seminars, which are open to all, will be led by financial and investment advisors Jamie Lapin and Thiago Glieger and will take place via Zoom, from 7-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday nights.
The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will kick off “Public Works Week” on Saturday, May 20, with Truck Day at the MCDOT Depot and Salt Barn in Gaithersburg. Truck Day is a free, family-friendly event that invites members of the community to touch, climb and explore the many first-response, construction and transportation vehicles that make the county run.

Residents are being asked to offer opinions and recommendations as Montgomery Parks plans to replace the South Germantown Adventure Playground. The playground, which is 20 years old, is one of the most-used in the County.

The third annual Montgomery County Children's Business Fair will return in August after a three-year hiatus due to the health crisis. Applications are now being accepted for the event that will take place from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Aug. 19. The fair, which will be held in Rockville Town Square, is open to ages 6-15.
