Mental Health Awareness Month

As we continue to recover from the extreme disruptions of the pandemic, we recognize that the focus on mental health needs to be at the forefront. The impact of mental health is embedded within our society, and we must prioritize building support capacity across all systems and organizations, especially those that work directly with our youth.

EveryMind, in partnership with Montgomery Parks and other organizations, has events planned throughout the month of May to connect with mental health resources, including "With Parks in Mind" in Germantown this Saturday afternoon (see the flyer below for more information).

We must advance connections to resources for our residents facing mental health and substance abuse challenges while ensuring they are met with support, compassion, and care.

AAPI Heritage Month

We kicked off this year's Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with a proclamation and celebration at the Council, including a wonderful video made by our incredible Public Information Office.

My office also recently had the opportunity to participate in the MCPS pilot course, Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Studies, at Richard Montgomery High School, being taught by Ms. Rebecca Garrigues. Six other high schools around the county currently offer the class, and the hope is that it will expand to all in the future. Students have taken the lead in the creation of the APIDA course, including helping to write the curriculum.

Autism Acceptance Month

The Autism After 21 Breakfast, organized by Madison House, demonstrated the strong support and combined efforts within our community to spread awareness about the different needs the autistic individuals have throughout their lives while improving access to those resources.

I proudly joined Councilmember Jawando and County Executive Elrich in presenting the Autism Acceptance Month proclamation, appropriately exchanging the word 'Awareness' for 'Acceptance' to reflect the importance of advancing inclusivity and empowerment of the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) community within our society. We also highlighted the incredible endeavors of advocacy organizations and programs that support ASD individuals, families, and caretakers, including Jenn Lynn, Executive Director of Upcounty Community Resources, Inc. (UCR).

UCR also had their annual 5K Walk & Roll-a-thon and Dance Party to celebrate their 10th anniversary of serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Montgomery County.

I was also honored to celebrate the new name launch for WeAchieve, formerly CHI, as well as to receive the WeAchieve Champion Award "for going above and beyond to ensure WeAchieve flourishes and continues to fulfill its mission to break through barriers so people with intellectual and developmental disabilities can contribute, connect, and lead the lives they choose".

Youth Empowerment

A couple weeks ago, Dr. Jermaine Williams, President of Montgomery College, gave the "State of the College" address to outline his plans to ensure Montgomery College students are equipped with the knowledge and skills to make them successful in our evolving socioeconomic climate. I appreciate the focus of Montgomery College to engage with the surrounding communities to encourage civic engagement, community advocacy, and equity.

Recently, I have had several opportunities to connect with Montgomery College students, from discussing the FY24 budget to starting this week with a visit to a physical education and exercise science course at the Rockville campus. I enjoyed sharing my career experience, particularly my time as the Director of the Montgomery County Department of Recreation with the students in "Principles and Practices of Health Fitness", taught by Professor Michael Clark.

Last Thursday, I spoke at the free Narcan training event at Montgomery College - Germantown Campus, attended by students, faculty, staff, and residents. The panel included individuals with different perspectives who are all working toward formulating solutions to combat the opioid crisis, followed by an informative presentation by Ben Stevenson II from the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services. Every attendee received a Narcan kit with instructions and information about substance abuse resources.

Coming Soon: Scotland Juneteenth Festival!

I was honored to participate in the media event to announce the upcoming Juneteenth celebration and schedule of events hosted by Scotland Community and led by LaTisha Gasaway-Paul. It promises to be an important and fun festival!

Save the Date: Gaithersburg Book Festival

The annual Gaithersburg Book Festival will be back at Bohrer Park on Saturday, May 20 from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm. This literary celebration is hosted by Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman, the Gaithersburg City Council, and the Cultural Arts Advisory Committee, and it has been a yearly highlight since its inception in 2010.

Mes de Concientización sobre la Salud Mental

Mientras nos recuperamos de las rupturas extremas de la pandemia, reconocemos que el enfoque en la salud mental debe estar al frente. El impacto de la salud mental está integrado en nuestra sociedad, y debemos priorizar la creación de capacidad de apoyo en todos los sistemas y organizaciones, especialmente en aquellos que trabajan directamente con nuestra juventud.

EveryMind, en asociación con Montgomery Parks y otras organizaciones, tiene eventos planificados durante todo el mes de mayo para conectarse con los recursos de salud mental, incluido "Con los parques en mente" en Germantown este sábado por la tarde (haga clic en el botón de abajo para más información).

Mes de la herencia AAPI

Comenzamos el Mes de la Herencia de los Asiáticos Estadounidenses y de las Islas del Pacífico de este año con una proclamación y una celebración en el Consejo, incluido un maravilloso video realizado por nuestra increíble Oficina de Información Pública.

Mi oficina también tuvo recientemente la oportunidad de participar en el curso piloto de MCPS, Estudios desiamericanos de las islas del Pacífico asiático (APIDA), en la escuela secundaria Richard Montgomery, impartido por la Sra. Rebecca Garrigues. Actualmente, otras seis escuelas secundarias del condado ofrecen la clase y se espera que se amplíe a todas en el futuro. Los estudiantes han tomado la iniciativa en la creación del curso APIDA, lo que incluye ayudar a redactar el plan de estudios.

Mes de Aceptación del Autismo

El Desayuno "Autismo después de los 21", organizado por Madison House, demostró el fuerte apoyo y los esfuerzos combinados dentro de nuestra comunidad para difundir la conciencia sobre las diferentes necesidades que tienen las personas autistas durante sus vidas mientras mejoran el acceso a esos recursos.

Yo participé con orgullo al Concejal Jawando y al Ejecutivo del Condado Elrich en la presentación de la proclamación del Mes de la Aceptación del Autismo, intercambiando apropiadamente la palabra "Conciencia" por "Aceptación" para reflejar la importancia de promover la inclusión y el empoderamiento de la comunidad del Trastorno del Espectro Autista (TEA) dentro de nuestra sociedad. También destacamos los increíbles esfuerzos de las organizaciones y programas de apoyo que ayudan a las personas, familias y cuidadores de TEA, incluida Jenn Lynn, directora ejecutiva de Upcounty Community Resources, Inc. (UCR).

Empoderamiento juvenil

Hace un par de semanas, el Dr. Jermaine Williams, el Presidente de Montgomery College, pronunció el discurso "Estado del colegio" para delinear sus planes para garantizar que los estudiantes de Montgomery College estén equipados con el conocimiento y las habilidades para que tengan éxito en nuestro clima socioeconómico en evolución. Agradezco el enfoque de Montgomery College de comprometerse con las comunidades adyacentes para alentar la participación cívica, la defensa de la comunidad y la equidad.

Recientemente, he tenido varias oportunidades de conectarme con estudiantes de Montgomery College, desde discutir el presupuesto del año fiscal 24 hasta comenzar esta semana con una visita a un curso de educación física y ciencias del ejercicio en el campus de Rockville. Disfruté compartiendo mi experiencia profesional, particularmente mi tiempo como Director del Departamento de Recreación del Condado de Montgomery con los estudiantes en "Principios y Prácticas de Salud y Bienestar", dirigido por el Profesor Michael Clark.

El jueves pasado, hablé en el evento de instrucción gratuito de Narcan en Montgomery College - Campus de Germantown, al que asistieron estudiantes, profesores, personal y residentes. El panel incluyó a personas con diferentes perspectivas que están trabajando para formular soluciones para combatir la crisis de opioides, seguido de una presentación informativa de Ben Stevenson II del Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos del Condado de Montgomery. Todos los asistentes recibieron un kit de Narcan con instrucciones e información sobre recursos para el abuso de sustancias.

El Festival del Libro Anual de Gaithersburg regresará a Bohrer Park el sábado 20 de mayo de 10:00 a. m. a 6:00 p. m. Esta celebración literaria es organizada por el Alcalde de Gaithersburg, Jud Ashman, el Consejo Municipal de Gaithersburg y el Comité Asesor de Artes Culturales, y ha sido un punto culminante anual desde su creación en 2010.
