Building Better Communities by Building Safer Communities

Dear Friends,
Everyone in our community deserves to be safe. This week, I had the opportunity to join a group of residents in Montgomery Village who are organizing to improve public safety after a series of recent car break-ins, incidents of vandalism to common areas, and a shooting last summer.
|
|
We discussed processes and timelines for specific safety improvements in the Cider Mill community, including improved lighting, security cameras, security staffing, and additional police patrols. It was a reminder of the importance of community policing - law enforcement proactively building relationships and trust with residents. |

Thank you to the residents of Cider Mill who have formed the Lugares Seguros Safe Places Tenants Association and Action In Montgomery for its incredible support.
Together with 6th District Police Commander Captain Eric Stancliff, Upcounty Regional Services Center Director Greg Wims (representing County Executive Marc Elrich), and property owner Housing Opportunities Commission, we have a plan for immediate improvements. We're also building the meaningful and lasting relationship with County Government that our residents deserve to deter crime and create a safer and healthier community.

Public hearings are an important way to weigh in on legislation and budget proposals before the County Council. I encourage you to bookmark and share this webpage of upcoming Council public hearings with your network and contact us at councilmember.luedtke@montgomerycountymd.gov with any questions about the process.
This includes a public hearing on Tuesday on Bill 8-23, which I introduced to establish guardrails so the many County Boards, Committees, and Commissions that advise us and serve as public forums are doing so in a consistent and transparent way.
If you can't testify at a public hearing, don't worry! You can reach out to all councilmembers via this web form.

Councilmembers Luedtke and Katz presenting a Council proclamation to the 480 Club for 10 years of serving the Montgomery Village and Gaithersburg communities
I was honored to help celebrate the tenth anniversary of the 480 Club and founder Joseph Hooks, who has done so much to train and mentor students in Montgomery Village and Gaithersburg.
Joseph and 480 Club have also provided mentoring through the school system's Excel Beyond the Bell program and are a tremendous positive force providing access to athletic training, social-emotional learning, and more. Congratulations to the 480 Club!
Please reach out to councilmember.luedtke@montgomerycountymd.gov if you or someone you know is involved with a nonprofit or community organization you think deserves to be featured.
