Dear Friends,
Thanksgiving gives us time to reflect on all we are grateful for this year. At the top of my list this year, and every year, is my family -- my amazing wife, my four beautiful children, my parents and my chosen family and friends, who have supported me through the highs and lows that this year brought.
As my first term on the Council and my term as Council President come to a close, I am reminded every day of how grateful I am to serve my community in this role. I am eternally thankful that I get to serve Montgomery County’s beautiful and diverse community with support and engagement from our active and civically-minded residents. As I often say, this is and continues to be the honor of my lifetime. I look forward to continuing in this important work for the next four years.
On behalf of the Council and the entire Albornoz family, I want to extend my best wishes for a safe, healthy and happy Thanksgiving.

Fond Farewell to Outgoing Councilmembers

Please tune in to the Council session next Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. as we commemorate the end of the 19th Council and pay tribute to the four outgoing Councilmembers: Tom Hucker, Nancy Navarro, Craig Rice and Hans Riemer. Each of these outstanding public servants leave their own unique and lasting legacies that have made a difference in the lives of our residents and will help move our community and the Council into the future. We thank them for their years of service and contributions to our County.
The swearing in of the 20th Council will be held at the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda on Monday, December 5 at 11 a.m. Residents can learn more and register to attend the ceremony at https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/mcg/inauguration.html.
Council Passes Legislation to Prohibit Firearms Near Public Spaces
I was proud to sponsor legislation with Councilmember Tom Hucker, that was unanimously supported by my colleagues, that will make our streets and public spaces safer. Expedited Bill 21-22 will prohibit the possession of firearms within 100 yards of certain public places throughout Montgomery County. I continue to believe that guns create more problems, often with tragic outcomes, than they attempt to solve. This legislation will help to ensure that we do everything possible to minimize the number of guns in our public places of assembly.

I remain heartbroken by the recent explosion and fire at Potomac Oaks Condominiums in Gaithersburg. As the criminal investigation continues, we continue to hope for a full recovery for all those who were injured, and we will continue to support the families who lost so much in the fire. We also send condolences to the family of the individual who lost their life in the blast.
Seeing the destruction from the building explosion in-person was devastating.
I’m grateful to the first responders who responded to the scene, our health and emergency response team, including nonprofit partners, that are working to support impacted residents’ long-term recovery, and our law enforcement partners who are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. The Council stands ready to support residents and is committed to putting forth policies that protect tenants and keep families safe in their homes.

Hearing From Our Next Generation of Leaders
 We were thrilled to host the Council’s annual Youth Town Hall with Montgomery County middle and high school students! We had great turnout with nearly 400 young people joining in-person and online. This was a great opportunity to hear from our young people about issues impacting them. We learned a lot and look forward to continued engagement with these dynamic students.

“There are countless numbers of incidents here locally and regionally and nationally that are continuing to underscore the importance of the notion that more guns is not the answer,” said Council President Gabe Albornoz.

When asked by Council President Gabe Albornoz how she plans to approach the continuing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, Davis said she plans to lead collaboratively. “I am not coming in to fix it; I am coming to work on a team that is well-established and working well.”
She also said she is committed to addressing public health disparities in the county.
Bethesda Beat: Nourishing Bethesda leads donations of Thanksgiving meals for needy families
Elected officials including County Executive Marc Elrich (D) and County Council President Gabe Albornoz (D-at-large) attended the giveaway last week. In roughly two years of operation, Nourishing Bethesda has given away almost a million pounds of food, according to a news release.

Updated COVID-19 boosters are available for people ages five and older. The new single-dose bivalent boosters target the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 spike proteins. Check appointment availability or search for providers through Maryland’s Vaccine Locator.
Covid-19 Test Kits, N95 Mask Distribution and At-Home PCR Tests
Rapid test kits and N95 masks are available for pickup at any one of 19 Montgomery County Public Library branches – see the available times and dates for in-person pickup here. The limit is two test kits per person per visit (each kit has two tests) and four N95 masks. At-home PCR tests are available at several locations. Residents can now also self-report their Covid-19 test results.

Montgomery County has various food distribution events across our community in the coming weeks including in Silver Spring, Olney, Gaithersburg and more. Queridos amigos,
El día de Acción de Gracias es un momento para reflexionar sobre todo lo que estamos agradecidos. Como cada año, lo primero en mi lista es mi familia – mi fabulosa esposa, mis cuatro hermosos hijos, mis padres, el resto de mi familia y mis amigos, quienes me han apoyado en todos los altibajos de este año.
Ahora que mi primer término en el Concejo y mi término como Presidente de este cuerpo legislativo están por concluir, todos los días recuerdo lo agradecido que estoy de poder servir a esta bella y diversa comunidad del Condado de Montgomery y contar con el apoyo y compromiso de todos ustedes. Como he dicho varias veces, este trabajo continúa siendo el honor de mi vida. Y por eso estoy muy contento de continuar con esta importante labor en los próximos cuatro años.
De parte del Concejo y toda la familia Albornoz, queremos desearle un día de Acción de Gracias lleno de felicidad, salud y paz.

 El siguiente martes a las 2:30 p.m. este pendiente de la sesión del Concejo ya que estamos conmemorando el final del Concejo número 19 y le haremos un tributo a los cuatro miembros del Concejo salientes: Tom Hucker, Nancy Navarro, Craig Rice y Hans Riemer. Cada uno de estos destacados servidores públicos dejan un legado único y duradero el cual ha creado una gran diferencia en las vidas de nuestros residentes y han ayudado a mover a nuestra comunidad y al Concejo hacia el futuro. Le damos gracias a ellos por sus años de servicio y sus contribuciones.
El lunes 5 de diciembre a las 11 a.m. se realizará la juramentación del vigésimo Concejo la cual se realizará en el Centro de Música de Strathmore al norte de Bethesda. El Concejo Aprueba la Legislación Sobre la Prohibición de Armas de Fuego Cerca a Lugares Públicos
El miembro del Concejo Tom Hucker y yo tuvimos el honor de patrocinar el proyecto de ley que pasó unánimemente para hacer que nuestras calles sean más seguras. Este proyecto de ley acelerado 21-22 prohibirá la posesión de armas de fuego a 100 yardas de ciertas áreas públicas en el Condado de Montgomery. Sigo pensando que las armas de fuego crean más problemas que en realidad los problemas que se están tratando de resolver, y muchos de estos problemas terminan en desenlaces trágicos. Con esta legislación se hará todo lo posible para minimizar el número de armas de fuego en los lugares de aglomeración pública.

 Sigo con el corazón partido por la reciente explosión e incendio en los Condominios de Potomac Oaks en Gaithersburg. Mientras la investigación criminal continúa, esperamos la pronta recuperación de las personas lesionadas y continuamos apoyando a las familias que perdieron tanto durante el incendio. También le damos el pésame a la familia de la persona que perdió su vida durante la explosión.
Fue devastador el ver en persona la destrucción causada por la explosión.
Estoy agradecido por los socorristas que fueron a la escena del incendio, departamento de policía y demás equipo de salud y emergencia, incluyendo las organizaciones sin fines de lucro, que están trabajando para apoyar a los residentes impactados por los hechos durante esta recuperación de largo plazo. El cuerpo policial está realizando sus investigaciones para determinar las causas de la explosión. El Concejo está listo para apoyar a los residentes y está comprometido en la creación de políticas para proteger a los arrendatarios y mantener a las familias seguras en sus hogares.

Audiencia con Nuestra Próxima Generación de Líderes
¡Estuvimos muy contentos de celebrar nuestra audiencia juvenil anual con los estudiantes de la escuela media y de high school del Condado de Montgomery! Tuvimos la agradable asistencia en línea y presencialmente de cerca de 400 estudiantes. Esta es una gran oportunidad para escuchar a nuestros jóvenes sobre los problemas que les impactan. Aprendimos bastante y estamos esperando continuar este compromiso con estos estudiantes tan dinámicos.
