Registration for Montgomery County Recreation’s Winter Programs and Activities Begins Nov. 14
Registration for most of Montgomery County Recreation’s winter programs and activities will begin Monday, Nov. 14 at 6:30 a.m. Registration for Bone Builders will begin at 9 a.m. Programs and activities are tailored to a variety of interests, skill levels and ages. Winter offerings include aquatics, fitness, sports, visual and performing arts, therapeutic recreation, adult 55+ programming and more.
Online registration is available at ActiveMONTGOMERY.org. Programs will be available for viewing only, beginning Friday, Nov. 4.
Residents are able to build their own guide filled with programs tailored to their interests. The guide tool allows you to create a personalized program guide based on categories, locations, and ages of your interest. To build your guide simply visit mocorec.com/guide and follow these steps:
Select topics that interest you.
Choose locations.
Indicate age range.
Review your selection and create your guide.
There are hundreds of programs available this winter that promote an active, healthier lifestyle. Registration is also available by mail. If you have additional questions about registration, call 240-777-6840.
Community Meeting for Silver Spring Recreation and Aquatic Center to be Held Thursday, Nov. 3
The Silver Spring Recreation and Aquatic Center (SSRAC) is scheduled to open summer of 2023. As Montgomery County Recreation prepares to open the facility, a community meeting is being held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3 at the Silver Spring Civic Building to get input from residents and businesses.
Located in the Central Business District of Silver Spring, SSRAC is part of a Public-Private Partnership undertaken with the Housing Opportunity Commission and the Lee Development Group. This project includes approximately 120,000 gross square feet of public recreation space within HOC's larger housing project.
The first of its kind project will encompass recreation, aquatics and senior programming all under one roof. SSRAC will include both recreation and leisure activities. Pools are designed for general swimming, low level diving, exercise, aquatic play, training and more. A gymnasium, exercise and weight room spaces, movement and dance studios, multipurpose activity rooms, public use space and social space with a culinary arts kitchen are also included.

Youth Basketball Registration Underway
Dribble, pass, shoot, score! Registration for Montgomery County Recreation’s Youth Basketball programs will be open until Thursday, Nov. 10 for youth leagues and Wednesday, Nov. 30 for other programs. Montgomery County Recreation strives to provide a rich environment that fosters development of basketball fundamentals while also advancing skills in teamwork, discipline, friendship and sportsmanship. Montgomery County Recreation is still accepting applications for 2022 RecAssist, which provides eligible County residents an opportunity to receive a scholarship to use toward most programs. County residents who currently receive public assistance from any of these programs are eligible for RecAssist: Temporary Cash Assistance; Supplemental Security Income; Housing Assistance from a Shelter; Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program; Free and Reduced Meal Status through Montgomery County Public Schools; Maryland Medicaid; Care for Kids; Maryland Energy Assistance; Montgomery County HHS Rental Assistance Program; and WIC.
Senior Spotlight: Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center
In 2022 Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center is celebrating its 50th anniversary. A special celebration event was held in October featuring an outdoor farmers market, Angklung performances, demonstrations in tai chi and knitting, and more. View photos from the event here.
The center is named after Maryland State Senator Margaret C. Schweinhaut, who advocated for older adults to have a place to gather and enjoy activities. It is one of the first senior centers in the State. Hundreds of residents regularly visit the Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center for art programs, dancing, entertainment, fitness classes, singing, Tai Chi, yoga and more.
