As cases of COVID-19 and monkeypox continue to increase around the nation and in Maryland, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich talks about taking precautionary steps to prevent infection from each. He encourages residents to attend two upcoming health fairs, and he takes pride in another successful season of the County’s ‘Summer Rise’ program. The County Executive also notes the increase in new laboratory space in the county, with the most recent expansion of Accellx, which is a success story of our county incubators. The County Executive also notes the national news on abortion rights and explains what the County is doing to protect and strengthen reproductive rights for women.
The annual Montgomery County Agricultural Fair will be held over nine days for Aug. 12-20 at the Montgomery County Agricultural Center fairgrounds in Gaithersburg.
The hot weather likely has most people thinking of summer activities, but for Montgomery County Recreation, it is time to start addressing cooler days, pumpkins and fall fun. Registration of County Recreation’s fall programs and activities will begin at 6:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 15.
Montgomery County had an average of about 50 cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people at this time last year. For the last several weeks, the County is averaging more than 200 reported cases per 100,000 residents. The County, like the national trend, is seeing reinfections in some residents and health officials say that natural immunity is not as strong as the immunity people get from vaccination and boosters.
Monkeypox continues to be an infection of growing concern in Montgomery County and around the nation. Montgomery County has a limited supply of monkeypox vaccine and has established a new preregistration survey to identify residents who are interested in receiving a vaccination and are at risk for having been exposed to monkeypox in the previous four to 14 days.
A team of students from Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville finished second in the recent national “Envirothon®,” an environmental and natural resource conservation problem-solving, teambuilding and leadership competition for high school students across the United States, Canada and China. The competition, which was held at Miami University in Oxford, Oh., incorporates STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) principles, experiential learning and hands-on outdoor field experiences.
Summer RISE, an initiative led by the Montgomery County Public Schools’ (MCPS) Partnerships Unit in collaboration with businesses, government agencies, higher education institutions and nonprofit organizations, has concluded another successful season. Through RISE, approximately 700 MCPS students who will be juniors and seniors participated in career-based learning opportunities during the summer. Two even had a chance to interview County Executive Marc Elrich for a communications assignment.
Montgomery County’s Department of Permitting Services conducted a “sign sweep” on Thursday, Aug. 4, to remove signs illegally placed in public rights-of-way throughout the County. Those signs included campaign signs that were placed leading up to the July 19 Maryland gubernatorial primary election. More than 1,300 illegally placed signs were collected in the sweep.
Montgomery County continues to provide COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 6 months to 5 years old. Parents are encouraged to protect their children and get them vaccinated.
The fourth phase of Montgomery County’s COVID-19 rent relief program has reopened and is now accepting applications from eligible renters who either did not fully complete their previously submitted application or want to submit a new application for review.
Residents are invited to attend the free “Right from the Start” health event focused on support for Black children and families, from preconception through early childhood, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13, at the White Oak Community Recreation Center.

Clue the Musical, based on a book by Peter DiPietro and with music by Galen Blum, Wayne Barker and Vinnie Martucci, will be performed on weekends during Aug. 5-21 at the Gaithersburg Arts Barn. The presentation is a partnership of The Montgomery Playhouse and the City of Gaithersburg.
Montgomery County Public Libraries will close the Long Branch Library from Thursday, Aug. 4, to Sunday, Aug. 7, to complete repairs on the building’s HVAC system and plumbing. The branch will reopen on Monday, Aug. 8.
Call to Artists for Maryland Waterways Exhibit to be on Display from October to January at Benjamin Gaither Center Art Gallery in Gaithersburg
The City of Gaithersburg and the Arts Alliance of the Gaithersburg Parks, Arts and Recreation Corporation are seeking artists to participate in the “Maryland Waterways” exhibit that will be at the Benjamin Gaither Center Gallery in Gaithersburg from October through January.

Residents are invited by Montgomery Parks to provide input for the first phase of a new, one-acre park in Downtown Silver Spring. South Silver Spring Park, which will be located at 1110 East-West Highway (the former site of National Tire and Battery), will provide multiple spaces for active recreation, play and socializing. The park’s first phase is expected to open in 2023.
