 County Executive Marc Elrich this week reflects on his own experiences during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and encourages residents to attend a special event saluting Martin Luther King Jr. and heroes of the Civil Rights movement on Friday, Feb. 18. He wants to let residents know that the County indoor mask mandate will end on Feb. 21 and encourages unboosted residents to join the “Boosterama” event in Wheaton on Saturday. He addresses the importance of proposed State legislation, salutes the heroic action of a County Police Officer and pays tribute to a company that is celebrating its 50th year of doing business in the County.
 The Montgomery County Government will have special schedules for its programs and facilities in observation of Presidents Day on Monday, Feb. 21.
 Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Committee on Friday, Feb. 18, will host a tribute honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and heroes of the Civil Rights movement during Black History Month. “Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things for the Fight for Freedom” will be a free event starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda.
 Montgomery County Public Libraries will expand hours of branch service to include Sundays effective Feb. 27. The hours of operation had been reduced during the COVID-19 health crisis.
There may be a few more weeks of winter weather, but Montgomery County Recreation and Montgomery Parks are hard at work planning spring programs and summer camps. Registration for their summer camps will open Tuesday, Feb. 22. In addition, Montgomery Recreation will hold two free camp fairs to help families plan summer activities on Saturday, Feb. 26, and Sunday, March 13.
 Online requests for permits to reserve County athletic facilities for spring and summer can be made through the website of the County’s Community Use of Public Facilities (CUPF) starting Tuesday, March 1. The facilities will be available from March 15 through Aug. 15 for this permitting cycle.
 Montgomery County Public Libraries will host free programs in observance of Black History Month throughout February. All programs will be offered virtually.
The deadline to file as a candidate in a local office for the 2022 primary election has been extended by court order to Tuesday, March 22.

 Montgomery Parks will turn several of its parks into evenings of music, beer and food that will be suitable for all family members (excluding the beer part). There is no charge for admission for the “Acoustics and Ales” winter happy hour events, which will include an event in Elm Street Urban Park in Chevy Chase on Thursday, Feb. 24, but there are charges for beer, food and non-alcoholic beverages.
Maryland shoppers who want to save money and help protect the environment will have that opportunity by purchasing ENERGY STAR rated appliances during Shop Maryland Energy Weekend, which runs Feb. 19-21. During the weekend, appliances bearing the ENERGY STAR label, purchased in-store or online, will be exempt from the State’s six percent sales tax.
 Elizabeth Kolbert, staff writer for The New Yorker and author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Sixth Extinction, An Unnatural History, will be the featured speaker for the free “Contemporary Conversations Series” of Montgomery County Public Libraries at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 5. Ms. Kolbert will participate in a virtual conversation on climate change and how habits and decisions can make an impact.
 Children and teens of Montgomery County-based military families can find support at the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Easterseals in Silver Spring. The clinic will be offering the “Teen Stress Resiliency” program starting on Wednesday, March 2.
Montgomery County has released its Quarter 2 updates of the Fiscal Year 2022 Climate Work Plan. The updates highlight the progress that is being made to implement actions in the County’s ambitious Climate Action Plan that was unveiled last year. Through the second quarter of FY22, the County has made progress on dozens of actions to help reach the goals of the plan.
