Statement from Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich on E-Cigarette Lawsuit

For Immediate Release: Wednesday 16 October

With this lawsuit, we are making clear that we will not stand by while companies deliberately try to convince young people to become attracted, and possibly addicted, to vaping.  The growth of this industry started as an alternative to tobacco smoking and has turned out to be another industry preying on impressionable, young people.  This is similar to the way cigarettes were marketed to teenagers, and the consequences there were severe and long-term.  We cannot stand by and allow this type of deceptive marketing.  Winning this lawsuit will enable us to put an end to JUUL’s alleged marketing of e-cigarettes to kids with a court-ordered injunction; recover money the County has spent to attempt to curb the underage vaping epidemic; and obtain funds for the County to use going forward to abate the nuisance.  I appreciate the Council’s support of this effort.  Montgomery County will continue to make it clear we will not tolerate this type of deception.  We will not stand by and let companies or people mislead our children and citizens.
