Victim Assistance and Sexual Assault
Program Launches Education
Campaign About Sexual Consent
Montgomery County’s Victim Assistance and Sexual Assault Program (VASAP), part of the Department of Health and Human Services, has launched a public education campaign about bystander intervention and sexual consent. “Step Up, Stop Sexual Assault” posters in English and Spanish are currently displayed on Ride On buses throughout the county.
Violence against women is a major social issue that often goes unreported. The goal of the campaign is to urge individuals, particularly young men, to take an active role in lowering the incidence of sexual assault.
VASAP works to reduce the incidence of rape and sexual assault through public education, media outreach and professional training. VASAP provides crisis and ongoing counseling, support and compensation services for victims of crimes committed in Montgomery County or crime victims who live in Montgomery County. VASAP volunteers provide 24-hour companion services to victims of rape, sexual assault and domestic violence at Montgomery County hospitals and police stations. Volunteers also accompany and support victims during the court process.
