Trailblazers: 50 Years of Women at the United States Naval Academy, a special exhibit honoring 50 years of women at the United States Naval Academy is now open at the Museum of Historic Annapolis. It honors the thousands of women who have graduated from the Naval Academy and served our nation with distinction since the first brave group joined their male counterparts in the Brigade of Midshipmen in 1976. The exhibit features the stories of sixteen alumnae who made history by achieving many impressive firsts in military and later civilian life, shattering glass ceilings and defying traditional military roles.
These pioneering alumnae include Janie Mines, the first African American woman to graduate from the Naval Academy; Mikie Sherrill, the first woman Governor of New Jersey; and Yvette Davids, the first Hispanic American woman to command a warship and, in 2024, the first woman to serve as superintendent of the Naval Academy. By offering a spotlight on these individuals, this exhibit celebrates their accomplishments and everything they overcame to ensure future generations of women could serve our country with honor.
This exhibit, in collaboration with USNA Women, an alumnae network, will be on display until May 31, 2026, at the Museum of Historic Annapolis (99 Main Street, Annapolis, MD).
