Walktober 2024 is Here!
October is National Pedestrian Safety Month, as designated by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). In Maryland, planning for Walktober 2024, a month-long celebration of Maryland’s official state exercise, is well under way and promises an exciting lineup of events and speakers.
Throughout the month, Maryland state agency partners including the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), the Maryland Department of Planning (MDP), the Maryland Department of Health (MDH), MDOT’s State Highway Administration (SHA) and Maryland Highway Safety Office (MHSO), the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and non-profit partners America Walks and AARP, will share information and resources, including offering five Walkinars, on a variety of topics related to walking.

Funding Opportunities
Maryland’s Greenspace Equity Grants Program Now Open
Established by legislation in 2023 (House Bill 503), the Maryland Greenspace Equity Program is designed to “provide grants to eligible applicants for enhancing the public health and livability of overburdened and underserved communities by implementing projects to preserve, create, and improve public greenspace.”
Enhancing public health and the livability of our communities through greenspace amenities supports Maryland’s sustainable growth goals by increasing community vitality and reducing the demand to develop new areas.
