33rd Annual Archaeology Workshop

MHT and the Archeological Society of Maryland will host the annual archaeology workshop on Saturday, September 28, from 9 AM - 3:30 PM. This year's keynote speaker, Dr. Stephen Brighton (UMD), will highlight his work on the Irish Diaspora in the United States and Ireland by examining how Irish immigrants constructed meaning in their daily lives and expressed it through material culture. International Underground Railroad Month

By Dr. Brenna Spray, MHT/MHAA Outreach Coordinator

Every September we commemorate International Underground Railroad Month with different events across the state. This year, the Maryland Department of Tourism is highlighting Underground Railroad Month with a coordinated series of programming, as well as driving and walking tours across southern and central Maryland, where you can explore this year's theme "Finding Freedom, Faith and Family." The first event in the series was at Riversdale House Museum, where the site hosted a libation ceremony, historic interpretation of Emily Saunders Plummer, and the unveiling of the museum's newest interpretive initiative—silhouettes that showcase the enslaved that worked and lived in the house. You can learn more about Emily Plummer in MHT's blog post, Following Freedom’s Footprints: Exploring MHT’s Easement Sites in the Network to Freedom.

Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum will host a guided walk around the site on Saturday, September 7 from 11 AM - 12 PM, where visitors can learn about the lives of Native Americans, African Americans, colonists, tenant farmers, and more who have shaped and have been shaped by the landscape for millennia.

For a complete list of events, visit the Maryland Department of Tourism's International Underground Railroad webpage. You can also explore sites in Maryland that are in the National Park Service's National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
