Project to Rebury Ancestral Human Remains of African Descent in Maryland

The Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture and MHT have launched a project to identify lineal descendants or communities that are culturally affiliated with the remains of at least 13 individuals of African descent that are currently housed at the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory. These remains were found at sites in Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Queen Anne’s, and Wicomico counties. If you think you might have information, might be part of a descendant community, and/or would like to be notified of the project's progress, please fill out the project form.

Glyndon Train Station

By Dana Halpert, Preservation Officer - Maryland Historic Revitalization Tax Credit Program

This winter, please join us in celebrating the successful work done at the Glyndon Train Station (1904). Built to replace the station of 1895 that had burned down, the Glyndon Train Station is individually listed on Baltimore County’s Final Landmarks List and located within the Glyndon Historic District. The station currently is home to the Glyndon Branch of the United States Post Office, but historically served as a stop along the Western Maryland Railroad until passenger service stopped in 1959.

The Glyndon Train Station Limited Liability Company (GTS LLC) owns the building and formed as “a group concerned with the preservation and small-town character and appeal of Glyndon.” In 2021, GTS LLC applied for a small commercial tax credit to replace the building’s old furnace with a heat pump; work on the electrical system; remove dead trees; and swap out fluorescent light fixtures and metal halide light fixtures with LED fixtures on the interior and exterior.

MHT also holds an historic preservation easement on the property. Tax credit and easement staff worked together with the project team to coordinate the review and approval of the proposed scope of work, ensuring the overall project met the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation.

MHT has additional funding available for new small commercial projects! More information can be found on the Maryland Historic Revitalization Tax Credit Program webpage, or by contacting MHT tax credit staff at mht.taxcredits@maryland.gov.
