Maryland Department of Planning Publishes HB 90 Webpage

Housing

As of January 1, 2023, HB 90 (2021) requires all housing elements for municipalities and non-charter counties to “affirmatively further fair housing” (AFFH). This adds to the requirements to plan for affordable housing that HB 1045 (2019) initiated in June 2020. 

The Maryland Department of Planning (Planning) recently published an HB 90 webpage to help jurisdictions incorporate the new fair housing requirements into their comprehensive plan housing elements.

Maryland’s Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) Working Group: Celebrating 2022 Accomplishments, Looking Forward to 2023

2022 has marked an exciting year of progress for the Maryland Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV) Working Group.

The Working Group is made up of more than 500 state government, local government, industry, and non-profit stakeholders, including institutions of higher learning, dedicated to addressing the opportunities and challenges of integrating CAV technologies into the fabric of Maryland’s mobility systems.

Maryland State Data Center Releases 2017-2021 ACS Data Profiles for Maryland and the Nation

Maryland State Data Center

A division of the Maryland Department of Planning (Planning), the Maryland State Data Center (MSDC) is the state’s primary liaison with the Census Bureau.

MSDC provides Maryland residents, businesses, and local governments with demographic and socioeconomic statistics. It also produces the state’s official population and household projections and develops school enrollment forecasts.

Statewide Forest and Tree Study Can Help with Local Planning Decisions

Forest Study

A new study released in November by the University of Maryland Harry R. Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology is the most comprehensive study of Maryland’s forest cover and tree canopy ever completed.

The study, entitled The Technical Study on Changes in Forest Cover and Tree Canopy in Maryland (or the Maryland Forest Technical Study), contains both statewide and regional information that can provide crucial input for local governments looking at tree- or forest-related policies.

Maryland Launches New Tools to Support Military and Community Compatibility

Compatible Use Website

Starting in the mid-2010s, the Maryland Departments of Planning and Commerce, as well as local and military stakeholders, began partnering on planning efforts and resource development aimed to enhance collaboration between Maryland’s military installations and jurisdictions.

The first milestone of this collaborative effort was the development of the 2019 Maryland Statewide Joint Land Use Study Response Implementation Strategy. We are happy to introduce the completion of the latest milestones:  the Military and Community Compatible Use Website and the Renewable Energy Compatible Siting Project.

Since 1975, MHT has honored the outstanding preservation achievements by individuals, businesses, contractors, nonprofit organizations, local governments, and others who protect, promote, share, and give continued life to the historic places and cultural heritage that make Maryland unique.
