The Maryland Planning Commissioners Association (MPCA) is partnering in a regional planning education initiative called the Mid-Atlantic Planning Collaboration, which formed in 2020 to combine the educational resources and expertise of eight organizations. The partnership includes multiple American Planning Association state chapters, the West Virginia Univeristy Land Use and Sustainable Development Law Clinic, the Chesapeake Bay Program, the Rural Planning Caucus of Virginia, and the MPCA. 

As part of this collaboration, the MPCA and the Maryland Department of Planning (Planning) developed a 1.5 hour webinar titled Organizing & Managing Planning Boards: Insights for Citizen & Professional Planners, which is scheduled for Thursday, December 16 from noon to 1:30 pm. The webinar is approved for 1.5 AICP CM Credits.

Join Planning staff and two MPCA Executive Committeee members, Danny Winborne (President) and Roxanne Hemphill (Secretary), as well as Michael King, AICP (Regional Community Plans and Liaison Officer for the Navy and York County, Va Planning Commissioner) as they explore the vital partnership between professional and citizen planners (Planning Commissioners, Board of Zoning Appeals Members, Stakeholders) in the public planning sphere.

After attending this session, participants will be able to: (1) better organize and facilitate the mutual roles and responsibilities of planning staff and board members; (2) develop effective educational resources and support systems for planning board members; and (3) design and manage efficient and equitable public meetings. The session will cover foundational requirements such as organizational rules and procedures while also modeling the intricacies of a well-run public hearing.
