Maryland’s Affordable Housing Resource Database: A Brief Users’ Guide
In every region of Maryland there is a great need for additional affordable housing and communities from across the state have sought out funding sources and assistance for new and proposed housing of all kinds and for every type of household. At Planning, we know that a mixture of housing densities, forms, and costs are what help keep a community vital, and allow it grow and succeed. We further understand that with more efficient tools, and easily accessible information, we can help communities make better use of time, energy, and resources to fulfill all levels of housing needs.

Maryland’s State Hazard Mitigation Plan to be Updated in 2021
Hazard mitigation is any sustained action taken to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk to life and property from hazard events. MEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Branch collaborates with governmental and non-governmental partners before, during, and after disaster events to identify, craft, and implement comprehensive hazard mitigation strategies.

The New Decade Means New Comprehensive Plans
Many jurisdictions coordinate the development of new comprehensive plans with the arrival of decennial census data. Census data is a foundation of comprehensive planning, providing a snapshot of Maryland communities, outlining growth trends, and distinguishing key demographic indicators. In 2013, House Bill 409 increased the review period of a local jurisdiction’s comprehensive plan cycle to 10 years, instead of six years. The 2020 Virtual MPCA Conference Was a Huge Success, but the Work for 2021 is Just Beginning
The Maryland Planning Commissioners Association (MPCA), like so many other organizations and hardworking Marylanders, had to adjust its routine in 2020 to meet the demand of the COVID-19 pandemic. The MPCA looks forward to the day that we can all once again meet in person to swap citizen planning insights, share good food, and network with our colleagues. However, this year the organization conducted its annual fall conference digitally in an all-day event on November 9, and thanks everyone who joined and contributed to an amazing experience!
