Maryland 2020 Census Champions: Nominate Someone in Your Community!
The Maryland Department of Planning (Planning) launched its Census Champions program in early June. It recognizes members of the community who are going above and beyond working within their jurisdictions to spread awareness of the importance of participating in the 2020 Census. To date seventeen champions have been named!

Sharon Suarez: Champion of Affordable Housing – the Heart of Great Planning
Unfortunately for me, I have never met Sharon Suarez in person, and was unable to do so in preparing for this article...another modest example of the collateral damage that comes of living in times of a global pandemic. From a recent phone interview with her, however, I can say this with certainty: Sharon Suarez is – in the best possible sense of the phrase – a genuine force of nature! In discussing her nearly 30-year career as a certified planner, I came away in awe of her breadth of experience and, by all appearances, her inexhaustible fount of both inspiration and energy.

New! Maryland Department of Planning Launches Housing Dashboard
‘Dashboard’ has been trending as one of the top five government jargon terms for the past few years. Many have turned to this data visualization tool to make information more accessible, and to directly and spatially communicate the complicated analytics related to a particular topic. As part of its Housing Element Models and Guidelines (M&G), which we highlighted in last month’s Planning Practice Monthly, the Maryland Department of Planning (Planning) jumped on the dashboard wagon with housing planning.

Area Businesses and MDOT Work Together to Support More Options for Commuters: We Want to Share Your Company’s Story!
In May’s edition of Planning Practice Monthly, we featured the Maryland Department of Transportation’s (MDOT’s) Commuter Choice Maryland program in an article describing how this transportation demand-management program promotes alternatives (both pre- and post-pandemic) to driving alone, including teleworking, biking, walking, public transportation, and ridesharing. All these options are important because they help Maryland reduce congestion, conserve energy, protect the environment and improve the quality of life of all Marylanders.

Planning Commissioner Training Course Goes Digital
In a typical Maryland Summer, the Maryland Planning Commissioners Association (MPCA), in partnership with the Maryland Department of Planning (Planning) conducts in person Planning Commissioner Training Courses at the Maryland Municipal League (MML) and Maryland Association of Counties (MACo) Summer Conferences in Ocean City. This is anything but a typical summer. In response, the MPCA hosted a digital training session on July 21, with 108 people joining on Planning’s GoToWebinar Platform.

Keeve Brine
Keeve Brine joined the Maryland Department of Planning in October 2019 as a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Planner in the Geospatial Data and Analysis Division. As a GIS Planner he primarily works with the Protected Lands GIS data, which he says is “exciting for me, as I love nature and am glad to be a part of its preservation in Maryland.”
