- During the COVID-19 pandemic, Maryland Department of Planning staff are teleworking and will be temporarily unable to review and process standard mail. The department politely requests that all Maryland jurisdictions and others please submit most items electronically to Cassandra Malloy at cassandra.malloy@maryland.gov. For Clearinghouse intergovernmental review requests and inquiries, please continue to send them to mdp.clearinghouse@maryland.gov.
- Census 2020: Jurisdictions can check their real time Census response rates at the 2020 Census Response Rates website. The map is interactive and updated everyday at 3 PM. The user has the option to select the date and type of response (internet and total). Total responses include people who responded by phone, regular mail, and online. Finally, there is an option to choose the state, a county, or a sub county geography like cities and census tracts.
Planning Practice Monthly Launches New “Women in Planning Series” as part of Maryland’s 2020 Year of the Woman
Did you know that March is National Women’s History Month? Additionally, Governor Larry Hogan has proclaimed 2020 as the Year of the Woman in Maryland, in advance of the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote. Planning is launching a series of online articles called Women in Planning: How Women Have Shaped the Profession as well as Our Communities.

Planning Develops School Enrollment Projections
Each year as part of The Maryland Department of Planning’s statutory mandate to support Maryland’s public school systems, the Maryland State Data Center prepares public school student enrollment projections that look ten years into the future for the state’s more than 1,400 K-12 public schools. These projections are shared with the state’s twenty-four Local Education Agencies (LEAs) which represent Maryland’s counties and Baltimore City.

Lower Eastern Shore Collaborates with the MPCA on Citizen Planner Education
On February 21, more than 40 citizen and professional planners gathered at Salisbury University’s Guerrieri Student Union for the Maryland Planning Commissioners Association’s (MPCA) first regional workshop of 2020. The MPCA extends its gratitude to the university, Salisbury’s Mayor Jake Day, and Salisbury City Planner, Anne Roane, for sponsoring the event (and providing lunch!), helping craft the content of its educational sessions, and welcoming attendees from across the region with open arms. It was an early rise for those of us traveling from Central Maryland and beyond, but it was worth it.

Update: Maryland Bikeways & Related Bicycle/Pedestrian Programs -- Grants Information and Upcoming Deadlines
In the January edition of Planning Practice Monthly, we reported on $7.6 million in new funding issued by Governor Hogan for the Maryland Bikeways program. As part of its FY21 outreach efforts for the program, the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) hosted a webinar on February 25th. If you were unable to participate in the webinar, or wish to review the information presented, it can now be viewed online and the presentation slides can be found on MDOT’s website.

Susan Holm Llareus joined the Maryland Department of Planning in October 2019 in a dual role as a Supervisor and Regional Planner in our Local Assistance and Training Division. With degrees in landscape architecture and horticulture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Susan comes to us from the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), where she enjoyed many years as a planner within the Urban Design Section of the Development Review Division.
