Flood Mitigation Guide: Maryland's Historic Buildings

The Flood Mitigation Guide: Maryland's Historic Buildings is a resource for local governments and preservation advocates interested in planning for and adapting historic buildings and districts threatened by flooding from tides, coastal surges, flash floods and sea level rise. You can view the full document via the link above, or browse by chapter on MHT's Weather It Together home page. Both the Weather It Together program and the Flood Mitigation Guide were developed with support from the National Park Service’s Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief Fund.

Join Us for the 28th Annual Workshop in Maryland Archeology on March 30!

On July 30, 1945, USS Indianapolis had just completed a secret mission to deliver parts of "Little Boy," the atomic bomb used in Hiroshima, when a Japanese submarine torpedoed the vessel. Of the hundreds who initially survived, only 316 sailors withstood the subsequent exposure, dehydration, drowning and shark attacks. In his keynote lecture at the 2019 Workshop in Archeology, hosted by MHT and the Archeological Society of Maryland (ASM), Captain William Toti (U.S. Navy ret.) will speak about the loss of USS Indianapolis and its rediscovery in 2017, as well as the effort to exonerate Captain Charles B. McVay III, who was court-martialed following the event.

In addition to the keynote, this year's Workshop in Archeology will include the following presentations:

  • No Cause to be Ashamed of Baltimore: African-American Life at the Eutaw Manor House (Lisa Kraus and Jason Shellenhamer)
  • Maryland's Magical Artifacts (Sara Rivers-Cofield)
  • "X" Never, Ever Marks the Spot?: the Maryland Historical Trust's Use of Magnetic Susceptibility (Matt McKnight)
  • The Shipwrecks of Curtis Bay (Susan Langley)

Registration is first-come, first-served and the admission fee ($7.00 general admission, $5.00 for ASM members and students) is payable at the door. We hope to see you on March 30!
