Maryland Heritage Areas Authority to Hold Public Hearing

Hearing to Address Proposal to Enlarge the Boundaries of the Canal Place Heritage Area
to Include the City of Frostburg

(September 28, 2018) Baltimore, MD – The Maryland Heritage Areas Authority will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at 5 p.m. at City Place in Frostburg to consider a proposal to enlarge the boundaries of the Canal Place Heritage Area (https://canalplace.org/) to include the incorporated City of Frostburg.

The Canal Place Heritage Area was certified in 1993 as Maryland’s first heritage area. The Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority manages the heritage area, which is currently comprised of portions Cumberland in Allegany County.

Certified Heritage Areas promote heritage tourism and foster partnerships between governments, businesses and nonprofit organizations to create more livable and economically sustainable communities. They preserve and celebrate Maryland’s history, cultural traditions, and natural areas through grants, loans, tax credits and other tools.

WHO:           Local government officials, heritage resource organizations, tourism industry
                     representatives, business and property owners, and others who are interested in the                             proposal to expand the boundaries of the Canal Place Heritage Area to include the City                         of Frostburg.
