SPRING COVER CROP CERTIFICATIONS UNDERWAY Farmers enrolled in Maryland's 2025-2026 Cover Crop Program have begun terminating their cover crops in advance of spring planting. Termination options include green chopping, plowing under, rolling/crimping, or using a burn-down herbicide. To receive payment, cover crops must be terminated by June 1, 2026.

LAST CALL FOR SMALL FARM COVER CROP APPLICATIONS! MDA's Small Farm Cover Crop Program will accept applications for its 2026 grant cycle through April 24. This program offers up to $1,500 a year to small-scale and urban growers who plant cover crops in their production areas to build healthy soils, improve crop yields, and protect local water quality.

AG SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE The Worcester Soil Conservation District is offering a $500 scholarship to a high school senior or college student pursuing a post-secondary education in 2026. Applicants must be Worcester County residents with plans to enter an agriculture-related field.

BE WISE: HIRE CERTIFIED MDA reminds residents and lawn care professionals to follow Maryland’s Lawn Fertilizer Law when caring for lawns this spring. This law is designed to protect local streams, rivers, and the Chesapeake Bay from fertilizer runoff originating from non-agricultural sources. These include golf courses, parks, recreational areas, athletic fields, businesses, and hundreds of thousands of home lawns.
