WINTER BAN ON SPREADING MANURE BEGINS DECEMBER 16 MDA reminds farmers that the winter ban on spreading manure and other nutrient sources on cropland, including food processing residuals, begins December 16. Spreading may resume on March 1, 2025, based on the farm's nutrient management plan, provided fields are not saturated, snow-covered, or hard-frozen.

GET CERTIFIED TO WRITE NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT PLANS Farmers and consultants looking to become certified to write nutrient management plans for their clients should register for the upcoming Maryland Nutrient Management Certification Exam on February 7 at MDA in Annapolis. Although it is not required, individuals who make nutrient recommendations for lawn-care companies, nurseries, and public grounds are encouraged to take the exam.

NEW TRAINING OPPORTUNITY FOR LAWN CARE PROS Professional Fertilizer Applicators can earn 2 CEUs by attending the December 13 recertification class hosted by the University of MD Extension at the Central Maryland Research and Education Center in Ellicott City. Topics include calibrating granule and liquid fertilizer, the fertilizer market outlook, and a focus on what healthy turf needs. The session runs from 8 am to 12:30 pm and includes lunch.
