NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT SUMMIT SET FOR JULY 17 MDA Secretary Kevin Atticks will host a Nutrient Management Summit on July 17 from 9:30 am - 1 pm at Anne Arundel Community College to outline changes to the nutrient management plan-writing program. Coffee and refreshments will be served at 9:30 am, and a light lunch will be provided.

MDA INVESTS $650,000 IN INNOVATIVE SOIL HEALTH/AGROFORESTRY PRACTICES Sixteen projects will receive grant funding totaling $650,000 through MDA's new Healthy Soils Competitive Fund. This unique program provides financial assistance to qualifying farms—large and small—and organizations that adopt innovative conservation practices that benefit climate, soil, and water.

MARYLAND PERMANENTY PRESERVES THIRTY-EIGHT WORKING FARMS The Board of Public Works approved 38 new Maryland Agricultural Preservation Foundation easements during its June 21 meeting. The easements permanently preserve 4,097 acres of prime farmland in Caroline, Carroll, Cecil, Charles, Dorchester, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Kent, St. Mary’s, Somerset, Talbot, Washington, Wicomico, and Worcester counties, for an investment of more than $19 million.

AND THE WINNER IS... A team of high school students from Harford County has won the 2023 Maryland Envirothon competition. The team from North Harford High School beat out teams from 13 counties with a winning score of 450 points out of 500 points. Teams from Allegany County (448 points) and Calvert County (441) placed second and third.

SO LONG AND BEST WISHES — The Conservation Grants Program bids farewell to Saiping Tso. During her eight years with MDA, Saiping managed the Manure Transport Program and, more recently, the Ecosystems Incentive Program. Her last day was June 16. Good luck, Saiping!
