IT PAYS TO PLANT EARLY! Farmers who signed up for MDA's cover crop grants can qualify for an additional $10 per acre incentive payment if they plant by October 10 using an approved incorporation method. Cover crop fields that are aerial seeded into standing corn between August 1 and September 10 also qualify for a $10/acre incentive payment.

MARYLAND PERMANENTLY PRESERVES SEVEN WORKING FARMS The Maryland Board of Public Works approved seven new Maryland Agricultural Land Preservation Foundation (MALPF) easements at their July 27 meeting. These easements will permanently preserve an additional 824 acres of prime farmland in Baltimore, Carroll, Charles, Frederick, and Worcester counties for an investment of more than $4 million.

GIVE IT A REST MDA reminds homeowners to allow established lawns to go dormant during the hot dry summer months. Applying fertilizer to force a lawn to turn green during its dormancy period can harm the grass and impact the Bay.

For the Record... An article in the Summer 2022 edition of Maryland Nutrient Management News incorrectly stated that watering troughs qualify for up to 100% state cost-share assistance. The fair will be open August 25 to 28, September 1 to 5, and September 8 to 11.
