POULTRY LITTER TRANSPORT BAN NOW IN EFFECT FOR CERTAIN AREAS An Executive Order restricting the movement of poultry litter in certain areas of the state has been issued by Secretary Bartenfelder to help stop the spread of Avian Influenza in Maryland. MDA UNVEILS ROADMAP FOR PROMOTING HEALTHY SOILS MDA, in collaboration with the Soil Health Advisory Committee, has released its recommendations for Maryland’s Healthy Soils Program. These include strategies to increase the use of on-farm soil health practices that capture carbon, improve water quality, and increase on-farm profitability.

JUMP START YOUR SPRING PLANTING Our grants help farmers offset costs to inject liquid manure into the soil. This helps prevent nutrient runoff, reduces odors, and preserves beneficial surface residue. We pay up to $45/acre for costs associated with injecting manure. Contact your local soil conservation district to apply for these grants.

LAWN FERTILIZER BLACKOUT DATES HAVE ENDED Fertilizer products containing nitrogen and phosphorus may now be applied to lawns as long as the ground is not hard frozen or snow covered, and heavy rain is not predicted. Remember – professionals that you hire to apply fertilizer to lawns must be certified by MDA or work under the supervision of someone who is certified.
