The Maryland Horse Industry Board is pleased to share an exciting opportunity and a call for Expressions of Interests from Maryland Horse Industry Board licensed stables interested in a partnership with the country’s oldest and largest Thoroughbred retirement organization, the TRF (Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation). This partnership will generate a three-fold benefit to the Horse Industry in Maryland:

- It will provide (at least) one Maryland farm with a long-term, stable income generating partnership. The TRF will pay a per diem rate per horse.
- It will give the Maryland Horse industry a flagship example of its commitment to Thoroughbred Aftercare.
Interested farms are asked to review the requirements provided below and submit their information through the TRF’s online Expression of Interest (EoI) form by December 21st
Initial conversations will be scheduled in early January.

About the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF):
- Founded in 1983, the mission of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation has been to save Thoroughbred horses no longer able to compete on the racetrack from possible neglect, abuse and slaughter.
- The TRF is the oldest and largest Thoroughbred retirement charity in the US, and was founded by Penny Chenery and Allaire DuPont. For 35 years the TRF has provided a safe, secure and lifelong sanctuary for horses no longer able to race and unable to pursue a 2nd athletic career.
- Since the first horse stepped off the van at our first TRF sanctuary farm in 1984, the TRF has built its model on the innovative Second Chances Program designed in partnership with Correctional Facilities to provide inmates with vocational training through a structured curriculum, while providing the TRF horses with a lifelong homes and care.
- Today, the TRF herd of 700 retired Thoroughbreds lives across the US in 18 farms, in 12 states, and within 8 Second Chances programs.
- Celebrating it’s 10 year anniversary in 2008, the TRF Second Chances Program at the Central Maryland Correctional Facility in Sykesville, MD is one of the TRF’s most successful programs. https://www.trfinc.org/farms-and-facilities/central-maryland-correctional-facility/
