A Message from Your Cat Librarian
|
I am a little bummed around this time of year. Everyone is preparing for Halloween and scary stories. But this is also the time that black cats get a bad rap. I am a little biased, as I am an all-black cat, but I’m far from bad luck. According to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, “Welsh folklore believed black cats would bring luck to a home and could even be a reliable weather predictor.” Not only that, it was believed that sailors on the ocean would keep a black cat on board the ship to bring good health on the journey. It was probably because we are good at catching rodents which kept diseases away. No matter what superstitions are out there, this black cat is nothing short of spectacular because I am your Cat Librarian. My human is glad to have crossed this path, in return, I am happy to be with you. Read on for more great news happening in the library!

Have you received your National Library Service (NLS) Parental Acknowledgement form? Due to a recent policy change from NLS, the Maryland State Library for the Blind and Print Disabled will update records for all patrons under 18. This will require all parents or guardians to complete a very brief Parental Acknowledgment form.
This policy change will continue to allow your child access to our collection and equipment and assist our library with efficient record-keeping.
On October 15th, the National Library Service (NLS) emailed all youth patrons using the current email on file. This email may be of your child’s school email address. If you did not receive this link, the Parental Acknowledgment form is available to download online.
Please take a few moments to complete it and return it to us, or complete the link within the NLS email sent on October 15th.
To complete the downloadable form:
- Go to www.loc.gov/nls/paform.
- Fill in the required information and sign the form by typing your name in the signature box.
- Save the completed form to your device and send it as an email attachment to reference.desk@maryland.gov.
- Please complete and return this form by December 2, 2024.
The whole process takes just a couple of minutes.
If you have trouble accessing the form or have any questions, please call us at 410-230-2443. We look forward to continuing to provide your family with accessible reading materials.
