In the spirit of Edgar Allan Poe’s life and work, Poe Baltimore and the Baltimore National Heritage Area (BNHA) announced the 4th Annual Young Saturday “Visiter” Awards (YSVA). This FREE competition is open to all Maryland high school students, grades 9-12 or equivalent. All submissions are due on or before 9:00 PM (EST) on Friday, October 31, 2024. This year, Maryland Humanities’ Maryland Center for the Book is co-sponsoring the competition.
The categories for this year’s competition are Interpretation and Adaptation. For category explanations, contest rules, and registration, visit https://poefestinternational.com/young-sva. Art forms and works in any medium and genre, including digital or web-based, are eligible. All submissions must be original works and should be inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's life and work.
In 1833, Edgar Allan Poe submitted a short story to The Baltimore Saturday ‘Visiter’— a weekly publication—and won the competition, which helped to propel his famed career. The Saturday ‘Visiter’ Awards, named after this life-changing experience, continue to inspire and recognize young artistic talent.
Contributing significantly to the development of young artistic talent in Maryland and promoting the legacy of Edgar Allan Poe, a total of six official award nominees—three in each category—will be notified and announced on Friday, December 6, 2024. They will also be invited to an awards ceremony on Edgar Allan Poe’s birthday on January 19, 2025. During Poe’s birthday celebration, one winner in each category will be revealed, receiving a certificate, an award medal, and a $1,000 cash prize. The four remaining nominees will each receive a certificate and a $400 cash prize.
Deadline is October 31st (of course). Find out more information here.
