A Message from Your Cat Librarian
|
Fellow human readers, I must confess. It is me, your cat librarian, napping on my human’s 2022 summer reading t-shirt. She wore it honorably as she planned events and programs for diligent readers like you. It has become my favorite thing to nestle with inside my favorite spot – a used Amazon box. Don’t judge me! It is cozy and perfect for a hard-working cat with a great mind. You can take your fluffy cat beds. My box is how I like it.
That reminds me to ask this personal question. Have you signed up for this year’s summer reading challenge? Every child or teen who participates will earn the 2024 “Adventure Begins at Your Library” summer reading t-shirt. This year, the color is hunter green, which reminds me of evergreen trees, campsites, and outdoor adventures. It is not too late for you to join and earn your t-shirt. Sign up today and start your summer adventure! Visit our website to learn more at: https://msla.maryland.gov/Pages/LBPD-Summer-Reading-Challenge.aspx.

Summer Visits at LBPD! Attention, Maryland Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVI): From July through September, you are invited to come by and see the behind-the-scenes of MD LBPD. This is a great opportunity to chat with the youth librarian and LBPD staff about our services, programs, and best steps in assisting your students for the upcoming school year. After your tour, enjoy the day in Baltimore. We are minutes away from the Walters Art Museum, the ornate Peabody Library, the centuries-old Washington Monument in lush Mount Vernon Place, the historic Lexington Market, the Enoch Pratt Free Library, the Maryland State Library Resource Center, and many other fantastic local restaurants and attractions.
Set a date and visit us. If interested, please contact LaShawn Myles, Youth Librarian, at kidsdesk.lbpd@maryland.gov to learn more details and set up your tour. Tours must be arranged in advance. Can’t arrange a tour, no problem. You are welcome to stop in for a brief visit when the library is open to the general public, Monday–Friday, 8 AM–5 PM. Until next school year, enjoy your summer!

Instead, Charlie realizes that his stay-cation is just as adventurous: his backyard is filled with wild animals, he tries to make money finding lost pets, and he must survive the storm of the century!
Activity:
- Place a clothespin on a craft pom. Dip the pom in paint (brown or black), and make prints on the plate. Cover most of the paper plate with the prints!
- Create ears with construction paper by making semicircles! Use a larger, darker semicircle for the outer ear and a smaller, lighter semicircle for the inner ear. Glue the inner ear on top of the outer ear to make two-toned ears.
- Make a nose by tracing a bowl on the construction paper to create a circle. Cut out the circle, and then draw the nose and mouth on the circle, or use other household craft items to make the nose and mouth.
- Attach the nose to the bottom of the paper plate, and attach googly eyes towards the top of the plate. Make sure the paint is dry before you glue the nose and eyes to the plate!
- Glue the ears to the back of the plate above the eyes, with one ear on each side.
