Libraries play a vital role in preparing young children for school by providing interactive and playful programs in which children can develop social, emotional, math, science, and executive function skills and practices. The Reimagining School Readiness Toolkit provides free, online, research-based resources, created specifically for library staff. These resources make it easy for you to enhance what you are already doing, with eye-catching tips, planning tools, program surveys, activity ideas, family conversation starters, social media posts, and more.

CALD Statement Against Censorship
The Congress of Academic Library Directors shared their recently adopted CALD Statement Against Censorship.
I Partner with my Public Library Award
From OCLC:
As libraries continue turning outward to communities, the importance of collaboration increases. We not only have to share information about core library services, but we also have to share information about how and why we work with community partners on everything from animal adoption to equity in the foster care system. The I Partner with My Public Library Awards offer a platform for public library workers to celebrate their community partners. These ten awardees come from diverse communities and represent a wide range of projects, programs, and types of collaborators. Read on to learn more about all the award recipients and stay tuned for the call for nominations in June 2024.
Resources for Supporting Veterans and Military-Affiliated Patrons
From OCLC:
Libraries play a vital role in serving the diverse needs of their communities, and one group that often benefits greatly is our nation's Veterans, current military members, and their families. Chances are you’re already doing great work in welcoming this population, offering needed information and services, and helping them stay connected to their communities. This collection of resources can help libraries enhance their support for our military-affiliated community members, ensuring that they receive the assistance and recognition they deserve. Explore topics including mental health resources, community engagement, employment and education information, and community reintegration after military service. Explore a selection of booklists and podcasts that offer display ideas and firsthand stories from those who have served.

Update on DPLA strategic visioning process
Dear Friends of DPLA,
I wanted to update you on the assessment of our cultural heritage program that we’ve been running this fall, to share with you what we’re learning and what comes next.
In September we engaged Sarah Lutman of 8 Bridges Workshop to review our work aggregating digital material. Sarah conducted more than 60 interviews with people key to our work and the field—you can see the list here. We shared preliminary learnings at our Community + Open Board meeting in October, which you can watch here. (Thank you to everyone who took part.)
My main takeaway thus far has been the desire from many to be part of reinvigorating and re-imagining DPLA’s work in a collaborative way. We’re now building on those conversations by organizing small group discussions at which we will review and get reactions to ideas that have risen during our program review this fall. If you’re interested in taking part in one of these small group meetings, please sign up here. And feel free to share any thoughts or questions you have with me, bracken@dp.la. Our goal is to develop ideas for our board to consider at its next meeting on January 19th.
Lastly, I want to thank all of you for your willingness to participate in this work with us. In announcing this review in August, I said that we had no fixed end point in mind, and it’s been difficult, and sometimes scary, to embrace that level of uncertainty. I am thankful to the many of you who have raised your hands to be part of building a future with us, and for your grace and partnership as we work together to ensure access to knowledge for all.
Thanks for your support,
John S. Bracken
Executive Director, DPLA
