April started out with April Fool's Day, but flooding is no joke. Flood damage is one of the most common and costly disasters in the United States. Flooding can occur almost anywhere, even if you do not live in a high-risk area known as a “special hazard flood zone.”
It is important to understand that homeowners policies generally do not cover flood damage. You should evaluate your risks and take steps to protect your home or business from flooding. Just one inch of flood water can cause $25,000 in damages to your home. One way to manage your risks is to purchase additional insurance to cover damage caused by flooding. Flood insurance is less expensive than you might think.
Also, when flooding is imminent or predicted, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policyholders are eligible to receive up to $1,000 to purchase supplies in advance like tarps, sandbags, and more.
While the Maryland Insurance Administration does not sell insurance and we cannot recommend a particular policy or insurance company, we do want to help you learn what types of coverage are available. Additionally, we are here to assist you if you have a complaint involving an insurer, an insurance producer, public adjuster or adviser.

On March 26, 2024, the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed causing many interruptions resulting in losses for individuals and businesses. The Maryland Insurance Administration is encouraging all carriers doing business in the state to make reasonable accommodations so that individuals and businesses impacted by the reduced operations of the Port of Baltimore do not lose coverage due to non-payment of premium.
