Healthy Trees Hyattsville
The City of Hyattsville has been recognized as a Tree City by the Arbor Day Foundation for over 30 years. To protect our urban forests and the Anacostia River watershed, the City has comprehensive tree care and stormwater management practices.
Tree Care Best Practices in Hyattsville
Fall is a great time to care for trees while the weather is relatively mild and trees are preparing for their winter dormancy. Review the City's tree care brochure for advice and resources to help keep your trees healthy.
A reminder that if you need to remove a tree on your property, the City requires a permit for trees 50" or more in circumference depending on their location. Illegal removal or destruction of a tree can be punishable by fines up to $1000 per tree.

Trees in the Public Right of Way
Trees planted in the public right of way (the grassy areas between the curb and the sidewalk) are the property of the City of Hyattsville. These trees are maintained by the City, with pruning and tree removals scheduled in the spring and fall seasons.
You can find a list of trees currently planned for work at hyattsville.org/trees. Please be aware of an increase in tree trimming trucks around the City during the fall months.
Any damage, removal or pruning of trees in the public right of way without City approval may result in a fine to the resident. You can request pruning or report damaged public trees online at hyattsville.org/requests, by using the MyHyattsville app or by calling (301) 985-5032.
If you'd like to request a tree to be planted in the public right of way adjacent to your property, please complete this form. New City trees are typically planted in the fall or spring, and resident requests are given priority.
This summer's high heat and drought conditions took a toll on several of the newly planted trees in the City's public right of way. The City is monitoring these trees and ones that are no longer viable will be replaced in the Spring.
Leaf Collection Services
Leaf vacuuming services have started on City residential streets and will run through December, weather permitting. Find the leaf schedule at hyattsville.org/leaves.
To help us keep the leaf vacuuming program running efficiently, please place leaves in loose piles at the curbside. Avoid placing leaves in the street when possible, as this can obstruct traffic and storm drains. Do not include sticks, rocks, or other debris in leaf piles as they can damage vacuum equipment. Avoid parking over piles to give the trucks clear access.
If you miss your leaf collection day, you can bag leaves in paper yard waste bags and leave them curbside for Monday morning compost & yard waste collection. You can also "leaf them alone" and mow them into your lawn for a free, natural fertilizer!
A reminder that the City's gas-powered leaf blower ban is now in effect. All residents and contractors must use electric-powered blowers within City limits. Violators can be issued fines. Make the switch to a blower that is healthier for you and the environment! Details at hyattsville.org/leafblower.

Invasive Species Removal/Forest Maintenance
Volunteers are needed to help remove invasive plants from City parks on the third Saturday of each month, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.!
Invasive plants are fast growing and crowd out our native plants, covering young trees and damaging mature ones.
Please check the City Calendar for upcoming locations. RSVP to environment@hyattsville.org to be alerted of weather-related cancellations. Gloves and tools are provided; dress appropriately for yard-work with long sleeves, pants, and closed-toe shoes. Student service learning hours are available to volunteers.
