Attend a special celebration of Jim Henson's legacy on May 19 & 20!
Visionary artist Jim Henson (1936-1990) was an alumnus of Hyattsville’s Northwestern High School, where he began developing prototypes for the Muppets. The Jim Henson Courtyard in Hyattsville’s Driskell Park is dedicated to his early work.
The City and The Jim Henson Legacy invite community members to celebrate Henson’s connection to Hyattsville with events on May 19 & 20! Both events will take place in Driskell Park, 3911 Hamilton Street.

Friday, May 19, 8 p.m.: Sing-a-long to the original 1979 Muppet Movie, introduced by Heather Henson, daughter of Jim and Jane Henson and Chairperson of The Jim Henson Legacy.

Saturday, May 20, 2 - 5 p.m.: Ceremony with remarks by City officials, members of The Jim Henson Legacy, and the Henson family; NWHS student performances; puppet making crafts; scavenger hunts, and more fun!

Public meetings this week
Election Day is tomorrow!
It's finally here! Election Day is tomorrow, Tuesday, May 9!
Voters who received a mail-in-ballot have until 8 p.m. tomorrow to return their ballot to a secure drop box at the City Building, Felegy Elementary, or the Hyattsville Branch Library. Do not mail your ballot as it will not arrive in time to be counted!
Anyone wishing to vote in-person can do so between 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. tomorrow at the City Building, 4310 Gallatin Street. Same-day voter registration will also be available.
Everyone is invited to come celebrate democracy at the Election Fest starting at 5 p.m. at the City Building! Join us for free ice cream and hot dogs, a bouncy house, DJ, and the kids vote to decide whether or not a hot dog is a sandwich! Stay late to hear the unofficial election results after the polls close.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month
This May we encourage community members to check out the free mental health and wellness programs offered year-round through our Mental Health 24/7 initiative. Learn more at hyattsville.org/mentalhealth.

On May 15 the City will host a lunch and learn workshop from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the City Building, 4310 Gallatin Street focused on “Brain and Body Health: 7 Steps for Enhancing your Health and Mental Wellness.” Space is limited. Upcoming Traffic Calming Meetings
The City’s Public Works Department is hosting two community meetings this May about ongoing traffic calming projects. Join for updates and share your feedback!
Jefferson Street Bike Boulevard Meeting: Attend this virtual community meeting to hear updates on the Jefferson St Bike Boulevard traffic calming project and provide your feedback on how the temporary installations are working. Register at hyattsville.org/calendar. If you can’t make the meeting a survey will also be available on HelloHyattsville.com through May 31.
Gallatin Street Meeting: Attend this in-person meeting! UPDATED LOCATION: The corner of Gallatin Street and 36th Avenue. Hear updates on the final design and timeline for installation of traffic calming measures on the 3500-3700 blocks of Gallatin St.The final design will be posted at hyattsville.org/streets when it's available.

Notices & Deadlines
Household Emergency Relief Funds are still available: The deadline to apply for the Hyattsville Household Emergency Relief Program is May 31! City residents and families can apply for up to $5,000 in relief to help offset the financial difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Learn more and apply at hyattsville.org/rescueplan. For questions or assistance with the application, call (301) 985- 5000 or email ARPA@hyattsville.org.
Corridor Investment Grant Program: Hyattsville's Corridor Investment Grant Program provides grants of up to $5,000 to businesses, non-profits, and community members for creative placemaking projects, programming, or business development strategies. The application deadline is June 9. Visit hyattsville.org/CIP to learn more and apply.
It's Parking Permit Renewal Season: All residential parking permits set to expire between March – June 2023 may be renewed online when the renewal portal opens for your zone group. Find parking permit information and the window for your renewal at hyattsville.org/res-parking.
Maryland State Highway Administration Construction Updates: The Maryland State Highway Administration is currently working on two projects in the City limits. Please use caution and be prepared for traffic when traveling through these areas.
Construction is underway for the Trolley Trail extension, resulting in intermittent lane closures on Route 1 Northbound and Southbound between Charles Armentrout Drive and Farragut Street. UPDATE: Construction will be moving to the intersection of Route 1 and Farragut Street in the next few weeks. The crosswalk at that intersection will be temporarily closed while work is completed. Pedestrians will be detoured to the crosswalk at Gallatin Street. Follow the project's progress in the MDSHA's portal.
The final phases of work are also underway in the Queens Chapel Road project, including roadway and sidewalk improvements between Ager Road and Hamilton Street. You can follow that project here.

The City's COVID-19 Vaccine and Testing site will close after tomorrow, May 9
After three years in operation, the City's COVID-19 testing and vaccination clinics at the First United Methodist Church of Hyattsville will close after May 9.
The site will be open tomorrow offering free COVID-19 vaccinations and booster doses from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m.
The City would like to express deepest gratitude to our site partners: Luminis Health, Giant Food, Pastor Penn and the staff of the First United Methodist Church, and the Hyattsville Community Development Corporation. We also could not have done this work without the steadfast and untiring leadership of the City's Emergency Operations Manager, Reggie Bagley. Thank you Reggie!
For future COVID-19 vaccine and testing needs, please visit your local pharmacy, healthcare provider, or contact the Prince George's County Health Department.
The City still has COVID-19 self-test kits available for pick-up at the City Building, 4310 Gallatin Street. Kits are available during business hours, M-F, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. One kit per person present; each kit contains two tests.
