The program provides $9 million in tax credits to Maryland taxpayers filing their 2025 tax returns. By completing the application, taxpayers can qualify for up to $5,000 to pay towards their remaining student loan debt.
To qualify, applicants must:

- File 2025 Maryland state income taxes
- Have initially incurred at least $20,000 in undergraduate and/or graduate student loan debt
- Have at least $5,000 in outstanding student loan debt at the time of applying for the tax credit
- Currently be making payments on their student loans
All eligible Maryland residents are welcome to apply. Most applicants qualify for the tax credit. Maryland State employees with student loan debt will receive awarding priority.
Tax credit recipients must prove they have used the full Student Loan Debt Relief Tax Credit amount to pay their eligible student loans. If they cannot, they will be expected to return the credit.
