Spring Into Action: Empowering Maryland’s Small Business Community

spring

Small businesses are the heartbeat of our communities. They bring purpose, foster connection, and reflect the rich diversity that defines Maryland. Our state is home to individuals from all walks of life, each contributing to a dynamic and evolving socioeconomic landscape.

As colleagues and state employees, we have the power—and the responsibility—to uplift and engage with the small business community. That means holding ourselves and each other accountable, leading with intention, and creating meaningful opportunities for growth and inclusion.

So, how do we do this? Let’s SPRING INTO ACTION!

GO full throttle in your efforts to connect with and support small, minority, women, and veteran-owned businesses. DO your part to carry out the Governor’s vision of equity, inclusion, and progress across all agencies. SHOW your commitment by sharing how your unit is increasing engagement and participation in the SBR, MBE, and VSBE Programs.

Together, we can make a lasting impact.

Quarterly Compliance Call

From the Desk of the MBE Ombudsman

by Nichelle Johnson

Ombudsman

Often when the MBE Ombudsman unit calls, there might be a problem. Although we all work to ensure that the MBE Program is implemented well at the unit level, sometimes issues do arise. However, we want to work with you to be more proactive.

When procurement units are completing important functions such as MBE form reviews, compliance monitoring, or Procurement Review Group (PRG) document preparation, remember that in addition to your MBE Liaison and legal counsel, the MBE Ombudsman unit is here to assist you as well. If you have questions or need to meet with us, just send us an email at mbe.ombudsman@maryland.gov or go to our webpage and click our Contact Us box to let us know when you would like to meet. As Henry Ford said,"If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself."

If you would like special training for your unit, reach out to us. We have provided PRG training, liquidated damages training, and compliance training to our procurement unit partners. We are here to serve both you and our small minority and women owned businesses. Let us know how we can help you today!
