Discovered By: Home fire/security system - later upgraded to a fire inside the kitchen by the neighbor

Area of Origin: Kitchen 

Preliminary Cause: Accidental - due to failure of lithium-ion battery that was actively charging. 

Additional Information: The initial response was an automatic fire alarm, which notified the owner, who was not home. He called his neighbor to check on the home, who then discovered a fire inside the kitchen. The neighbor rescued two dogs and attempted to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher. Firefighters extinguished the remaining fire and contained the damage to the immediate kitchen area. While Harford County Disaster Assistance was requested, the owners indicated they would self-assist. Investigators later concluded the fire was due to an unspecified failure of lithium-ion batteries for remote-controlled boats.
