Denton Shed Fire Leads to One Fire Fatality

CAROLINE COUNTY, OCTOBER 13, 2024 - The Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Maryland State Police are continuing their investigation into a fire at 22320 Butler Court in Denton of Caroline County, which claimed the life a 58 year old male.

Around 2:24 pm, Queen Anne-Hillsboro Volunteer Company responded to Butler Drive for a reported shed fire with injuries. Approximately 32 firefighters arrived on scene and controlled the shed fire within 30 minutes. A male victim was located just outside of the shed, and subsequently succumbed to his injuries. The victim was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to determine the exact cause of death. The fire was originally reported by occupants of the residence and local neighbors to 911.

While Deputy State Fire Marshals are continuing their investigation into the cause of the fire, it has been determined the fire originated within the shed. The entire shed and it's contents were destroyed by the fire with an estimated $15,000 in damages. A joint investigation between the Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division and the Office of the State Fire Marshal is standard operating procedure whenever a fatal fire occurs.

"My heart aches after learning of another fire death, and every member of the Office of the State Fire Marshal extends our deepest condolences to the family," said acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray.
