STATEWIDE (June 3, 2024) - Senior Deputy State Fire Marshal Shayne McKinney has been selected as Deputy State Fire Marshal of the Year for the Upper Eastern Regional Office. He was nominated by his supervisor and regional commander, Deputy Chief State Fire Marshal Caryn McMahon. The Upper Eastern Regional Office comprises Kent, Queen Anne's, Caroline, and Talbot counties. He will join other Deputy State Fire Marshals chosen throughout the state for the 2023 James C. Robertson Deputy State Fire Marshal of the Year Award.

After retiring from the Easton Police Department in 2018, McKinney was hired by the Office of the State Fire Marshal and assigned to the Upper Eastern Regional Office.  Known for his integrity, fairness, and commitment to service, Deputy McKinney has proven himself an invaluable asset within the agency and the broader community.

"With a background in law enforcement investigations, Deputy McKinney has excelled in arson investigations, handling over 30% of regional cases in 2023 alone. His efforts resulted in 27 investigations, 79 fire safety inspections, and oversight of 14 firework displays throughout the year. Notably, McKinney spearheaded three-quarters of the region's criminal investigations, leading to seven arrests and two juvenile referrals, with a commendable case closure rate of 38%." said McMahon in her nomination letter.

Continuing his dedication to community safety, Deputy McKinney actively participated in Community Risk Reduction initiatives, distributing smoke alarms to those in need. An advocate for continuing education, he invested over 80 hours in fire investigation and law enforcement education in 2023.

Beyond his investigative prowess, McKinney's commitment to the agency's mission is evident in his collaborative spirit and willingness to assist colleagues. He played a crucial role in developing the agency's body-worn camera policy, reflecting his proactive approach to enhancing operational effectiveness.

"Deputy McKinney's professionalism and dedication have earned him respect within the agency and across the fire and police communities in the Upper Eastern Region.
