Two-Alarm Fire Destroys Galvinell Meat Company

CECIL COUNTY, MD (April 30, 2024) - On Tuesday, an early morning fire destroyed a well-known Cecil County meat butchering shop, causing an estimated $2.5 million in damages.

Around 5:45 a.m., firefighters were called to Galvinell Meat Company, located at 461 Ragan Road in Conowingo, for a building fire. Firefighters from the Community Fire Company of Rising Sun arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof. Multiple fire departments, including around 50 firefighters from Cecil, Harford, Lancaster, and Chester counties, responded to the two-alarm fire, helping to bring the blaze under control in just over an hour.

A team of Deputy State Fire Marshals arrived on the scene to investigate the cause and determined that an employee was working when he first observed a fire within the ceiling area of the utility room. The fire quickly spread throughout the attic of the business, which was established in 1968.

While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, an electrical failure can not be ruled out. No injuries to people or animals were reported. The estimated dollar loss is a combination of structure, contents, machinery, food, and other products within the business.

Inspectors from the USDA and Cecil County Health Department were on the scene evaluating the safety of products stored in a freezer that was believed not to have been affected by the fire.

Galvinell's is a USDA federally Inspected plant that provides farmers of Cecil County and beyond with custom slaughter of beef, lambs, goats, and hogs
