Investigation Continues Into Multi-Alarm Elkton Business Fire

CECIL COUNTY, MD (December 11, 2023) - As the sun rises in Cecil County, Deputy State Fire Marshals are beginning better to understand last night's devastating multi-alarm fire in Elkton.

Just after 1:00 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to 505 Blue Ball Road for a building fire. Firefighters arrived to find Tiffin Mats ablaze. Over 100 firefighters from multiple fire departments from Cecil and Harford counties, including departments from nearby Pennsylvania and Delaware, responded to the scene to assist. It took nearly two hours to bring the fire under control, and no injuries were reported.

The business is located in the Triumph Industrial Park and is approximately 10,000 square feet. It manufactures athletic sports mats, including cheer, tumbling, and folding mats.

Investigators will be assisted by certified fire investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), our federal partners in fire investigation. The use of excavators will be considered to assist with removing heavy debris to assist investigators in determining the origin and cause of the fire.

An estimated dollar has not been established at this time. Deputy State Fire Marshals are assisted by K9's "Blondie," a standard operating procedure on any large-scale incident.
