Deputy Chief Sander Cohen To Be Honored By Highway Sign In Montgomery County
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD (December 6, 2023) - Maryland State Fire Marshal Brian S. Geraci will be joined by Maryland State Police and Rockville Volunteer Fire Department personnel, family members, and friends of Deputy Chief State Fire Marshal Sander B. Cohen on Friday morning for the dedication of a highway sign along I-270 in Montgomery County in his honor.
Deputy Chief Cohen was struck and killed on December 8, 2017, by a vehicle on southbound I-270, near Falls Road in Montgomery County, while assisting at the scene of another crash involving an off-duty FBI agent. Deputy Chief Cohen was off duty when he encountered a single-vehicle crash blocking the interstate's left lane. He activated his flashers and notified the Maryland State Police barracks that he was checking on the welfare of the driver, Supervisory Special Agent Carlos Wolff. He and Agent Wolff were standing on the shoulder of the highway when another vehicle swerved to avoid the crash scene.
The Maryland State Highway Administration will erect the highway signs in honor of Deputy Chief Cohen's sacrifice along I-270 between Falls Road and Montrose Road. Cohen was 33 years old and a nine-year veteran at his death. He was Regional Commander assigned to the Northeast Region at the time of his death.
The ceremony will occur on Friday, December 8, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Motorists are asked to consider alternate routes or proceed cautiously according to the signage and flaggers.
